This study aims to determine the impact of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) assisted by Google Sites on the writing skills of 11th-grade students at SMK Negeri 4 Tarakan. This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi- experimental design involving 62 students from 11th-grade DKV 2 and 11th- grade DKV 3 classes. The 11th-grade DKV 2 class was designated as the experimental group, while the 11th-grade DKV 3 class served as the control group. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests focused on students' writing skills. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality tests, homogeneity tests, and a paired-samples t-test. The results showed that the average score of the experimental group increased from 73.39 on the pre-test to 78.23 on the post-test, representing an increase of 4.84 points. The results of the paired-samples t-test showed a statistically significant difference between the pre- test and post-test scores in the experimental group ( t = - 3.606 ; df = 30 p = 0.001 ) In contrast, the mean score of the control group increased from 75.81 to 77.26, but the difference was not statistically significant ( t = - 0.85 ; df = 30 p = 0.402 ) These findings indicate that the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) assisted by Google Sites has a positive and significant effect on the writing skills of 11th-grade DKV 2 students. Thus, the implementation of PjBL assisted by Google Sites can improve the writing skills of 11th-grade DKV 2 students.

This study aims to ascertain the impact of skimming techniques on the reading comprehension of descriptive texts among tenth-grade students at SMAN 4 Tarakan. This research utilized a quantitative approach using a one-group pre-test and post-test pre-experimental design. The sampe comprised Class X-5, consisting 0f 35 students selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument was a reading assessment including 15 questions, conducted prior to and following the intervention. The skimming approach was implemented during three sessions. The researcher subsequently evaluated using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test due to the non-normal distribution. The study’s results indicated that the students’ average pre-test score of 44.26 rose to 74.20 on the post-test. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test yielded a p-value below 0.05 (p 0.05), leading to the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha) and rejection of the null hypothesis (Ho). Consequently, the skimming strategy significantly influences the reading comprehension abilities of tenth-grade students at SMAN 4 Tarakan when engaging with descriptive texts.

This study aimed to improve students' vocabulary through the use of English songs in class VII of SMP Negeri 3 Tarakan. The background of this study was the low level of students' vocabulary mastery, which had an impact on their learning motivation and English skills in general. This study used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, which consisted of two cycles, each covering the stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through observation sheets of teacher and student activities and vocabulary tests in the form of fill-in-the-blank questions. The results showed an increase in students' vocabulary mastery through the use of songs. In Cycle I, the results showed that only 39% of students achieved the minimum mastery criteria (KKTP), while 61% did not reach the target. Teacher and student activity was recorded at 70% and 60%, respectively, in the first meeting, and increased to 85% and 70% in the second meeting. Based on these findings, several improvements were made for the second cycle. In the second cycle, the percentage of students who achieved KKTP increased significantly to 77%, while only 23% did not meet the minimum criteria. Teacher and student activity also increased, reaching 92% and 89%, respectively. Then, the vocabulary test results also showed improvement, with an average score of 39% of students meeting the success criteria, while 61% o students did not meet the criteria. In Cycle Two, 77% of students met the success criteria, while 23% did not meet the criteria. exceeded the minimum mastery criteria (KKM). The final reflection was that the teacher successfully integrated songs to introduce new vocabulary, motivated students through interesting activities, and applied classroom management strategies that kept students active and focused Therefore, the effective use of English songs enhances the teaching and learning process, resulting in satisfactory vocabulary mastery, improved vocabular understanding, and increased student interest, attention, and engagement in English language learning.

Writing is one of the important skills in English that is often difficult for students, especially in composing descriptive texts. Therefore, it is necessary to implement creative and effective learning strategies. This study aims to find out how much influence the brainwriting strategy has on the ability to write descriptive texts of grade XI students at SMAN 3 Tarakan. This study uses a pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The subject of the study was grade XI students of SMAN 3 Tarakan, with a sample of 34 students from grades XI-D. The data collection instrument is in the form of a written test consisting of a pre-test and post-test. Data analysis was carried out using the SPSS version 23.0 program. The results of the analysis showed that the average pre-test score was 48.12 and increased to 66.98 in the post-test. Based on the results of the paired sample t-test, a significance value of 0.000 was obtained, which means it is smaller than 0.05. This indicates that the alternative hypothesis is accepted, while the null hypothesis is rejected. Thus, the use of brainwriting strategies has proven to be effective in improving the descriptive text writing skills of grade XI students at SMAN 3 Tarakan.

Reading is one of the basic skills in English that is important for students to be mastered. Therefore, appropriate learning strategies such as Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review (SQ3R) are needed to improve the students’ reading comprehension. The purpose of this study was to determine the significant effect of the implementation of SQ3R strategy on reading comprehension ability of descriptive texts of grade XI students. The research method used a pre-experimental method with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The population in this study was all grade XI students of SMAN 3 Tarakan, with a sample of 36 students from grade XI C selected using a purposive sampling technique. The research instruments used a multiple-choice test in the form of a pre-test and a post-test. In addition, the data were analyzed using the SPSS version 23.0 program. The results of the data analysis showed that the mean pre-test score was 52.36 and the mean post-test score was 74.58, with an increase of 22.22 points. The result of the paired sample t-test showed a significant value of 0.000 which was less than 0.05, which means that the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) was accepted. It can be concluded that the SQ3R strategy has proven effective in improving the reading comprehension ability of descriptive texts of grade XI students at SMAN 3 Tarakan.

Writing is recognized as an important skill for effective communication and the expression of ideas. However, many students still struggle to develop this skill. This research was conducted due to the low writing achievement of students and it aimed to determine the effect of using personal photos as a learning medium on the writing achievement of eleventh-grade students at SMAN 3 Tarakan. This research used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test model, involving 36 students from class XI-A. The instruments used written test in the form of a pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 16.0. The research results indicated an improvement in students’ writing achievement. In the pre-test stage, the average score of 58.5 was below the school's minimum standard (KKTP), indicating that most students had not yet reached the expected competencies in writing skills. However, after giving the treatment through the use of personal photos as a learning media, the mean score improved to 71.98, which means it had exceeded the school’s standard score and indicated a significant improvement in students’ writing achievement. The Wilcoxon test results showed a significance value of 0.000 (p 0.05), which means the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. These findings showed that the use of personal photograph has a statistically significant effect in improving the writing achievements of eleventh-grade students at SMAN 3 Tarakan.

This research aims to examine the influence of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) on eighth grade students' reading comprehension in descriptive text at MTs Negeri Tarakan. It used a pre-experimental research design with a one-group pre-test and post-test method. A total of 31 students participated in this study. The research instruments consisted of reading comprehension tests and observation sheets. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The results of the observation sheet were analyzed qualitatively. The results indicated that students' reading comprehension improved after being taught using the CSR strategy. The pre-test average score was 64.03, while the post-test average score increased to 74.68. The highest increase occurred in the aspect of finding specific information, while the lowest increase occurred in the aspect of determining the meaning of vocabulary. The Wilcoxon test showed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores, which confirmed the effectiveness of CSR in improving students' reading comprehension. Despite the improvement, some students still encountered difficulties, especially in understanding vocabulary. This suggests that additional instructional support, such as vocabulary enrichment activities, is required. Overall, this research concludes that CSR is an effective strategy to improve students' reading comprehension, especially in identifying important information from a text.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the ELSA Speak application on the speaking skills of eleventh grade Pharmacy students at SMK Kesehatan KALTARA. This study employed a pre-experimental design with one class pre-test and post-test with four meetings involving 21 students. The assessment of speaking skills was focused on 5 aspects; fluency, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and comprehension. The descriptive text was chosen for evaluating students' speaking skills which focused on the theme of health, including subtopics such as diseases, medicines, health workers, and medical devices. The results of statistical analysis through paired sample t-test showed a significance value of p = 0.000 (p 0.05), which indicated that the use of the ELSA Speak application had a positive effect on students' speaking skills and it was an effective and interesting learning tool to improve spoken English skills.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Cake application on the speaking skill of eighth grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah Boarding School Tarakan. This study employed a pre-experimental design with one class pre-test and post-test with four meetings involving 18 students. The assessment of speaking skill was focused on 5 aspects; grammar, vocabulary, fluency, pronunciation, and comprehension. The descriptive text used for evaluating students’ speaking skill which focused on the theme of Independence Day. The result of statistical analysis through paired sample t-test showed significance value of p = 0.000 (p 0.05), which indicated that the use of the Cake application had a positive effect on students’ speaking skill and it was an effective and interesting learning tool to improve spoken English skill.

Reading comprehension is one of the basic skills in English language which is quite difficult to be mastered, especially for students. Thus, in teaching reading comprehension, interesting teaching strategies such as the KWL strategy is needed. The aim of this research was to determine the significant effect of implementing the KWL strategy on descriptive reading comprehension of grade 7 junior high school students. The research method used pre-experimental method. The population of this research was students of class VII at SMP Negeri 4 Tarakan with a sample of class VII-10 of 29 students. The research instrument used a reading test in the form of pre-test and post-test. In addition, the results of data analysis obtained were processed using the SPSS version 25.0 program. The results of data analysis revealed that the average pre-test score was 57.44 and the average post-test score was 78.89. The Shapiro Wilk Test result was 0.965, which was greater than 0.05. It means the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (HO) was rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that teaching descriptive text using KWL strategy had proven effective in improving the reading comprehension at seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Tarakan.

The purpose of this study is to improve the student reading comprehension ability in descriptive texts by using the Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) strategy. This study used the Classroom Action Research (PTK) of Kemmis and McTaggart model which consisted of four stages namely planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The success criterion is 70% of students achieved a minimun score (KKM) of 70. Data collection was carried out through test assessments and observation on teacher and student activities using the CORI strategy. In 1st cycle, it was found that the percentage of student scores of 33% or 11 out of 30 students in the class had not reached a minimun learning completion score of 70, while in 2nd cycle, it reached 87% or 27 out of 30 students achieved a minimum completion score of 70 with an average score of 74. Threrefore, it can be concluded that the use of CORI strategy can improve the student reading comprehension at grade 7-4 in SMP Negeri 12 Tarakan

THE USE OF GUIDED QUESTIONS TECHNIQUE TOWARDS STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL ON DESCRIPTIVE TEXT AT EIGHTH GRADE OF SMPN 6 TARAKAN Stevani Nike English Education Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Borneo University Tarakan Email: [email protected] Advisor: Winarno, M.Pd Abstract: The purpose of the research was to determine whether or not guided questions technique help students in writing a descriptive text, by implementing pre experimental method; it was done by comparing the difference of their writing before and after they were thought using guided questions techniques. The subject of this research was the eighth grader students of SMP N 6 Tarakan. There were 28 students. The instrument was a written test consisting of guided questions in pretest and post-test to measure the subjects' learning achievement during the treatment Based on the analysis, it indicated that there was a difference between the pretest and posttest. In terms of their average score, it was 57.43 from the pretest, and it increased after the posttest, 71.64. This proved a significant difference between the situation before and after the treatment. The result of paired sample test showed that the result of t test (11.384) was much higher than t-table (2.052). Thus, it can be concluded that guided questions technique has been proved to be an effective technique to improve students' writing skill, especially descriptive text, for the subject in this research. CLASSIFYING ERRORS IN EIGHT GRADERS’S DESCRIPTIVE WRITING IN SMP NEGERI 2 SEI RURAL; AN APPLICATION OF A SURFACE STRATEGY TAXONOMY This purpose of this study is to describe and classify the types of errors in descriptive text. This was conducted in SMP Negeri 2 Sei Menggaris in the academic year of 2020/2021. The subjects were the students of eight grade, with 22 students. This employed mixed methods. The data were collected through written text, of which results were then analyzed using a surface strategy taxonomy. The result showed that there were 40 errors which were analyzed using the surface strategy taxonomy. Among the errors, there are omission errors (20) formation errors (17) placement errors (3) no addition errors identified. It is suggested for the teachers to pay more attention to the mistakes identify here and to give more portions in explaining the corresponding. For students, they need to improve their vocabulary. This is to reduce the errors in writing. They should read more references like books, magazines, the internet learning source. They can make a small note of words list to improve their vocabularies mastery.

This study was conducted to identify the types of errors in the students’ descriptive text. This is a descriptive qualitative study conducted in MIA 4 at SMAN 2 Tarakan in the 2020/2021 academic year. The subjects were 28 students. This research was conducted online on Friday 18 September 2020. The technique of data collection was a written test. It focused on classifying errors, based on the Surface Strategy Taxonomy. Based on the analysis, there were 153 errors, among of which are addition (18 errors or 12%), omission(33 or 21%), formation errors (101 or 66%), and placement errors (1 or 1%). The most common error is spelling errors, classified into misformation errors with 67 total error out of153 total errors. In conclusion, the researcher found 153 errors that occurred in a descriptive text made by the tenth grade students of MIA 4 from SMAN 2 Tarakan.

This research aimed to analyse the descriptive text writing skills of class XI SMK Negeri 2 Tarakan students. The objective of this research was to describe the problems students face in writing descriptive texts at SMK Negeri 2 Tarakan. This research was used the descriptive qualitative research method. The researcher used students of SMK Negeri 2 Tarakan as research subjects. In carrying out the research, the researcher used purposive sampling. There are two methods in collecting data, namely observation and documentation. The research data was processed and analysed using the theory of Mile and Huberman. The results showed: 1) observation, it can be concluded that there is a need for more explanation and more intense learning exposure, especially in students' writing style. 2) Interview, the result of the interviews to the students showed that almost students have difficulties in learning English. The most students’ difficulty in learning English was the students lack of vocabulary so the students don’t understand the meaning when the students listened what teacher said, when the students spoke, when the students read the text, and when the students wrote their task. 3) documents, showing the ability to write descriptive texts in 11th graders at SMK Negeri 2 Tarakan in terms of content, the organization, vocabulary, language, and mechanism. In addition, the researcher found various forms of writing errors in the descriptive text by 11th-grade students at SMK Negeri 2 Tarakan. The writing errors include error punctuation, typographical problems, capital letters, misplacement of words or incorrect word choice in the sentences, the usage of the incorrect term in the sentence, the problems in spelling words, the mistake of placing conjunctions in the phrases.

The purpose of this study was to assess the types of grammatical errors and the most common grammatical errors made by seventh-grade students in SMPN 5 Tarakan in writing descriptive text. The subjects of this study were 30 seventh-grade students. The data were collected by asking the students to write a descriptive text on the given topics. The data were analyzed using statistics and descriptive analysis. The result of the study showed that there were sixteen grammatical errors, namely verb to be, determiner, subject verb agreement, plural, singular, word order, word missing, unnecessary, conjunction, spelling, article, pronoun, possessive, noun, preposition, and gerund. Thus, the most common grammatical errors made by the seventh grade students of SMPN 5 Tarakan in writing descriptive text was Spelling with the percentage of 22.2%. Therefore, it can be concluded that the students faced problems in the process of writing a text such as having low knowledge about how to write a text using grammar correctly.

The purpose of this research was to describe the students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text and to find out the solution of students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text of tenth graders in SMA Frater Don Bosco Tarakan in academic year 2020/2021. This research is descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected from written test and interview. The research finding showed that the students have difficulties in linguistic aspect and non linguistic aspect. In linguistic aspect included grammar, vocabulary and mechanic, while in non linguistic aspect included content and organization. The percentage of this research showed that the students have difficulties in all points of scoring, the highest percentage is 81% of students have difficulty in vocabulary, the second percentage is 72% of students have difficulty in mechanic, the third percentage is 63% of students have difficulty in grammar, the forth percentage is 40% students have difficulty in content, and the last percentage is 31% students have difficulty in organization. Based on the data finding in this research, some suggestions are given to English teacher that the teacher should emphasize to solve the students’ difficulty and also the teacher should learn better to apply the techniques of teaching writing skill. Some suggestions are given the students to learn more enterprising about English, especially in writing descriptive text, pay attention to the teacher when learning, and if anyone does not understand the material then ask the teacher, respect teachers as you respect your parents.

AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT AT THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS AT SMPN 7 TARAKAN ABSTRACT Yesi Sampe, 2021. An Analysis of Students’ Ability in Writing Descriptive Text at the Seventh Grade Students at SMPN 7 Tarakan. (Advisor by Fitriawati, M. Pd). The purpose of this study was to analyze students' ability to write descriptive texts of grade VII-7 students at SMPN 7 Tarakan. The design of this research is a descriptive study. The population of this study is all grade VII students in the academic year 2020/2021. Researchers used Random Sampling in determining samples. Students in grades VII-7 consisting of 30 students were sampled in the study. The instrument used to retrieve the data in this study is a written test. Data analysis techniques used are; 1.) Researchers collect data using written tests, 2.) Researchers analyze the data, 3.) Researchers explained the findings of the written test. The results of the data analysis showed that there were no students (0%) who got a very good category, there was 1 student (3.33%) who got a good category, there were 2 students (6.67%) who received a fair category and 27 students (90.00%) got a low category. Based on the results of the analysis, there are still many students who have difficulty writing descriptive text correctly and correctly. Especially by using the correct generic structure, between one sentence and another that is not attached, placing the correct punctuation mark and the lack of vocabulary of the student has been one of the factors that cause students difficulty writing descriptive text. Siswa kelas VII-7 terdiri dari 30 siswa adalah sampel dalam penelitian ini. Instrument yang digunakan untuk mengambil data dalam penelitian ini adalah tes tertulis. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah; 1.) Peneliti mengumpulkan data dengan menggunakan tes tertulis, 2.) Peneliti menganalisis data, 3.) Peneliti menjelaskan temuan dari tes tertulis. Hasil dari analisis data menunjukkan bahwa tidak ada siswa (0%) yang mendapat kategori sangat baik, ada 1 siswa (3,33%) yang mendapat kategori baik, ada 2 siswa (6,67%) yang mendapat kategori wajar/sedang dan 27 siswa (90,00%) mendapat kategori rendah. Berdasarkan hasil analisis tersebut masih banyak siswa yang kesulitan menulis teks deskriptif dengan benar dan benar. Terutama dengan menggunakan struktur generik yang benar, antara satu kalimat dan kalimat lainnya yang tidak melekat, menempatkan tanda baca yang benar dan kurangnya kosakata siswa telah menjadi salah satu faktor yang menyebabkan siswa kesulitan menulis teks deskriptif. Jadi siswa perlu meningkatkan kosakata dan berlatih menulis dengan benar tidak hanya di sekolah tetapi juga di luar sekolah. Kata Kunci: Analisis, Keterampilan Menulis, Text Deskriptif.

This study aimed to determine whether the use of image media had an impact on improvement of the writing results of seventh grade students at SMPN 4 Tarakan. This study used an experimental design and seventh grade students at SMPN 4 Tarakan as the population. The number of samples in this study were 31 students from class VII-11 who were selected by purposive sampling tecnique. There were three stages in this research, namely pretest, treatment and posttest. The result showed that there was a difference in the mean score between the pretest and posttest. This was evidenced by the result of the students’ mean score. Their scores were 60.42 at pretest and 77.84 at posttest. It could be seen that the increase in the mean score of students at the posttest was higher than in the pretest and indicated a significant difference in the students’ writing scores between the pretest and posttest. In addition, the result of the paired sample t-test showed that the t-test of 7.955 was higher than the t-table 2.042. Based on the test results, the researcher concluded that the use of image media proved to be effective in improving the learning outcomes of the seventh grade students to write the descriptive text at SMPN 4 Tarakan.

This research is to describe the The Effect of Bits and Pieces Gamecan improve the students’ writing in descriptive text of seventh grader at MTs Negeri Tarakan. This research objective was to find out the effectiveness of usingBits and Pieces Gameto improvethe students’ writing in descriptive text of seventh grader atMTs Negeri Tarakan.This design of the research was Pre-Experimental research. The total population was 122 students. The sample of this research was 7Cclass that consisted of 31students. To determine the sample, this research used purposive sampling techinique. The instrument of this research was written tests. The data analysis was pretest and posttest. In analyzing the data, the researcher used descriptive analysis in the SPSS.24.0.The research results showed that there was differencemean score between pretest and posttest. It was proven by the result of the students’ mean score. The mean score in pretest was49.86 and in posttest was66.81. It was indicated that the mean has increased to 16.95. It can be seen that the improvement of the students’ mean score in the posttest was higher than pretest and it indicated that there was difference from students’ writing score between pretest and posttest. The result of paired sample t-test showed that t-test computation was 14.122higher than t-table (1.691). On the other word, 14.122>1.691it means (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted.The results of data analysis proved that the results of teaching writing by using Bits and Pieces Gamebe able to improve students’ writing in descriptive text. Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that Bits and Pieces Game is effective to improve students’ achievement in writing descriptive text at seventh grader students’ of MTs Negeri Tarakan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mencari keefektifan dari menggunakan metode Bits and Pieces Game untuk meningkatkan pemahaman menulis siswa kelas VII-C di MTs Negeri Tarakan. Desain dari penelitian ini adalah Pra-Eksperimen. Populasi penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas VII MTs Negeri Tarakan tahun pelajaran 2019/2020. Peneliti menggunakan Purposive Sampling dalam menentukan sampel. Siswa kelas VII-C terdiri dari 31 siswa adalah sampel dalam penelitian ini. Instrument yang digunakan untuk mengambil data dalam penelitian ini adalah tes tertulis. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah Deskriptif Analisis dengan bantuan SPSS 22.0. Hasil dari analisis data menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan nilai rata-rata antara Pretest dan Posttest. Nilai Pretest adalah 57.16 dan Posttest adalah 78.32. Terdapat peningkatan nilai rata-rata sebesar 16.95. Hasil dari Paired Sample Test adalah ttest=10.629 dan ttable adalah 20.42. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa Ha diterima dan H0 ditolak. Berdasarkan hasil analisis tersebut menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan metode Bits and Pieces Game dalam pemahaman menulis membawa pengaruh terhadap peningkatakan penguasaan dan pemahaman menulis siswa kelas VII-C MTs Negeri Tarakan 2019/2020.
