This research aimed to determine the effect of implementing English-language Webtoons on the reading interest and reading ability of 11th-grade nursing students at SMK Kesehatan Kaltara Tarakan. This research employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design in the form of a One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The research sample included 22 students selected using purposive sampling. The research instruments consisted of a reading interest questionnaire with 15 statements using a Likert scale and a reading ability test comprising 20 multiple-choice questions. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, a paired-sample t-test for normally distributed data, the Wilcoxon test for non-normally distributed data, and N-gain calculations. The results showed an increase in reading interest following the implementation of the Webtoon Trauma Center. The mean reading interest score increased from 53.48 on the pretest to 68.71 on the posttest, with a mean difference of 15.23. The results of the paired-sample t-test showed a significance value of 0.000 (p 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores. Reading ability also improved, with the mean score rising from 36.36 to 68.64. Improvements were observed in five reading skill indicators: finding factual information, identifying the main idea, understanding vocabulary, identifying references, and making inferences. Therefore, the implementation of the Webtoon Trauma Center could support improvements in students' interest and reading skills in English language learning, especially when accompanied by vocabulary support, structured reading activities, guidance, and appropriate classroom management.

This study aimed to improve the reading skills of Grade VII-B students through Phonics-Based Reading Activities at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Tarakan. The study was motivated by students' difficulties in recognizing English words, identifying letter-sound relationships, pronouncing unfamiliar words, reading fluently, and understanding simple English texts. This study employed a mixed-methods approach integrated with a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design. The participants were 18 Grade VII-B students. The research was conducted in three action cycles consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through written tests and observation sheets. Quantitative data were analyzed based on students' written test results, while qualitative data described students' participation and engagement during the learning process. The activities consisted of Read and Match, Phonics Story Time, Reader's Chain, and Read and Draw. The findings showed that the activities improved students' reading skills. The mean score increased from 55 in the pre-test to 75.56 in the post-test, an improvement of 20.56 points. The number of students achieving the minimum mastery criterion increased from 6 students (33.3%) to 13 students (72.2%). Observation results also showed increased participation and engagement. In the final meeting, 16 students actively participated, and the students' activity score reached 90, categorized as Very Good. Therefore, Phonics-Based Reading Activities contributed positively to improving students' reading skills and encouraging active participation in English reading activities

This study aims to ascertain the impact of skimming techniques on the reading comprehension of descriptive texts among tenth-grade students at SMAN 4 Tarakan. This research utilized a quantitative approach using a one-group pre-test and post-test pre-experimental design. The sampe comprised Class X-5, consisting 0f 35 students selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument was a reading assessment including 15 questions, conducted prior to and following the intervention. The skimming approach was implemented during three sessions. The researcher subsequently evaluated using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test due to the non-normal distribution. The study’s results indicated that the students’ average pre-test score of 44.26 rose to 74.20 on the post-test. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test yielded a p-value below 0.05 (p 0.05), leading to the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha) and rejection of the null hypothesis (Ho). Consequently, the skimming strategy significantly influences the reading comprehension abilities of tenth-grade students at SMAN 4 Tarakan when engaging with descriptive texts.

his study aims to describe the implementation of the CAKE application in English reading learning and to determine students' responses to its use among seventh-grade students at SMPN 14 Tarakan. This study was motivated by the low English reading skills of students due to limited vocabulary, difficulty in understanding sentence structure, and low student interest in English reading texts. To overcome these problems, this study utilizes the CAKE application as a Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) based learning medium. This study uses a qualitative descriptive design supported by simple quantitative data. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires, then analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the implementation of the CAKE application can be carried out well through systematic learning stages and the application of learning strategies such as scaffolding, collaborative learning, and continuous feedback. Students' responses to the use of the CAKE application show a positive trend, especially in increased interest in learning, vocabulary comprehension, and reading comprehension. However, this study also identified several obstacles, including time constraints, differences in students' technological abilities, and technical barriers such in limited devices and internet connectivity. Overall, the CAKE application has the potential to be a supporting medium for English reading learning for seventh-grade students.

Membaca merupakan salah satu bentuk dari berkomunikasi, baik itu berkomunikasi intrapersonal (dengan diri sendiri) maupun berkomunikasi interpersonal (dengan orang lain). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatan kemampuan membaca siswa dengan menggunakan media pembelajaran flash card. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan yaitu Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) yang dilakukan dalam 2 siklus, setiap siklus terdiri dari 4 tahapan yaitu: perencanaan, pelaksanaan, observasi, dan pengamatan. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas III A SDN 032 Tarakan tahun ajaran 2024/2025 yang berjumlah 26 siswa. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah observasi, tes, dan dokumentasi. Berdasarkan hasil observasi aktivitas mengajar guru pada siklus I sebesar 50% dengan kategori rendah, sehingga dilanjutkan pada siklus II menjadi 75% dengan kategori tinggi. Adapun hasil observasi aktivitas siswa pada siklus I yaitu sebesar 81,55% dengan kategori tinggi, kemudian dilanjutkan pada siklus II menjadi 89,60% dengan kategori tinggi. Berdasarkan hasil tes membaca yang dilakukan pada siklus I, siswa yang berada pada level membaca mandiri dengan persentase 65,40%, pada level membaca berkembang dengan persentase 15,40%, dan level membaca perlu bimbingan dengan persentase 19,20%. Sedangkan pada siklus II, siswa yang berada pada level membaca mandiri meningkat menjadi 80,80%, di level membaca berkembang mengalami penurunan dengan persentase 11,50%, dan pada level membaca perlu bimbingan juga mengalami penurunan dengan persentase 7,70%. Reading is a method of communication, both intrapersonal and interpersonal. This research aims to improve students' reading skills by using flashcards as a learning tool. Classroom Action Research (CAR) was used, with two cycles of four stages each: planning, implementation, observation, and assessment. The subjects of this study were 26 students from SDN 032 Tarakan's class III A during the 2024/2025 academic year. This study's data collection techniques included observation, testing, and documenting. The observation of the teacher's instructional activities in cycle I resulted in 50% in the low category, which was increased to 75% in cycle II. The results of student activity observations in cycle I were 81.55% in the high category, followed by cycle II at 89.60%. According to the results of the reading exam administered during Cycle I, students at the independent reading level accounted for 65.40%, those at the developing reading level for 15.40%, and those at the guided reading level for 19.20%. Meanwhile, during cycle II, students at the independent reading level reached 80.80%, while those at the developing reading level declined by 11.50%, and those at the guided reading level decreased by 7.70%.

This study aimed to improve the reading comprehension skills of ninth-grade students, especially in identifying the main idea and summarizing the text by using the GIST (Generating Interactions between Schemata and Text) strategy. This strategy was selected to train students to focus on the core information from the reading and reorganize it in a more concise and meaningful form. This research was a Classroom Action Research (PTK) conducted in two cycles, consisting of two meetings. The research subjects were 30 students of class IX-2 of SMP Negeri 08 Tarakan in the 2023/2024 academic year. Data collection was conducted through two main instruments, namely reading comprehension tests and observation sheets used to monitor student and teacher activities during the learning process. In the first cycle, the results discovered that only 22% of students reached the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM) score. Although teacher participation and performance showed improvement, there were still significant challenges, including students' difficulties in understanding the steps of the GIST strategy, low involvement in group discussions, and limited time in implementing activities. Therefore, improvements were made in the second cycle by providing a more detailed explanation of the strategy and using more interactive learning activities. The results in the second cycle illustrated a significant improvement. Significant improvement can be seen from the increase in students who reached the KKM, from 22% to 63%. Student participation also increased from 80% to 96%, and teacher performance from 85% to 96%. This implies that the GIST strategy is effective in improving learning outcomes and processes. The findings show that the implementation of the GIST strategy can improve students' reading comprehension, particularly in terms of identifying the main idea and summarizing the text effectively. The implication of this study indicates that the GIST strategy can be used as one of the effective alternative approaches for teachers in improving students' reading skills at the junior high school level.

The objective of the research was to improve students' reading skills on narrative text through jigsaw technique. The research was conducted at SMPN 4 Tarakan as a research site. The subjects of the research amounted to 28 students from class VIII-9 at SMPN 4 Tarakan. The research method used was classroom action research (CAR). It used the Kemmis and McTaggart model which was carried out in 2 cycles where each cycle consisted of the stages of planning, action, observation and reflection. The research instruments used were observation sheets and written tests. The results of the research showed an improvement in students' reading skill and text comprehension. This can be seen from the students' test results. The results of the reading test in the first cycle did not meet the criteria of success because the results showed that only 43% (12 out of 28 students) reached the criteria for achieving learning objectives while the results of the students' reading test in the second cycle showed that 79% (22 out of 28 students) reached the criteria for achieving learning objectives. The results of the observation sheet showed a significant increase in teacher and student activities from cycle 1 to cycle 2. Thus, the success criteria were met. Based on the results of the research, it concluded that the jigsaw technique can improve students' reading skills on recount text at eight grade students of SMPN 4 Tarakan. The Study aimed to find differences in students' reading skill scores between the 2013 Curriculum and the Merdeka Curriculum for Grade X1 students at SMAN 1Nunukan and SMAN 2 Nunukan in the academic year 2023/2024. This study used the causal-comparative method for SMAN 1 and SMAN 2 Nunukan, using the purposive sampling technique. This study used TOEIC as a reading test instrument. The researchers used SPSS program version 24.0 to analyze the data. The study result showed that the impact size value is 0,428 which means a big impact size, there are significant differences between the 2013 curriculum and the Merdeka curriculum. The factors that influence the 2013 curriculum are more dominant compared to the Merdeka curriculum, the teachers in the 2013 curriculum can create a comfortable and student-centered learning environment and students utilize technology in learning English, while teachers of the Merdeka curriculum are less proficient in learning, so that students in learning English do not master the spelling of words. Based on the above, there are dominant differences and SMAN 2 Nunukan is better.

The study aimed to find differences in students' reading skill scores between the 2013 Curriculum and the Merdeka Curriculum for grade XI students at SMAN 1 Malinau and SMAN 3 Malinau in the academic year 2023/2024. This study used the causal comparative method with a sample of 55 eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Malinau and 51 eleventh-grade students at SMAN 3 Malinau, using the purposive sampling technique. This study used TOEIC as a reading test instrument. The researchers used SPSS program version 24.0 to analyze the data. The study results showed that there is a significant difference between students at SMAN 1 Malinau who use the 2013 Curriculum and students at SMAN 3 Malinau who use the Merdeka curriculum in reading skills. The results of the Mann-Whitney test showed the P-value of -5.922 is higher than the significance level of 0.05, which means that the students' reading skill scores have differences between SMAN 1 Malinau and SMAN 3 Malinau. The school facilities are one of the supporting factors in improving student learning outcomes. This research aimed to analyze the implementation of Suggestopedia in teaching reading skills to class VIII students at SMPN 5 Tarakan. Suggestopedia is a learning method that emphasizes a relaxed learning atmosphere and the use of music to create a conducive learning environment. This research applied a qualitative approach with data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation. The research subjects were students in class VIII-I at SMPN 5 Tarakan. The research results illustrated that Suggestopedia created comfortable and relaxed classroom conditions for students. In the first stage the teacher organized the classroom environment comfortable and cheerful. After that, the teacher played live instrumental music in the background and displays the text to which students must pay close attention. Teachers involved games, sentence construction, and other activities to review students' understanding. This research aimed to describe teacher activities in the implementation stage of the Suggestopedia method. From these results, the author concluded that the activities of the Suggestopedia method in the teaching and learning process made students happy and interested in the teaching and learning process. This method improves students' reading skills and increased their interest and motivation in learning.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using the quizizz application as as a learning media to improve student reading skills. This research used a quasi-experimental method and the population was all the students of class VIII at SMP Negeri 2 Tarakan for the academic year of 2021/2022. The sampling technique was carried out by the purposive sampling with a sample of 64 students. The instrument was prepared by looking at some indicators from syllabus and lesson plan (RPP) for data collection. This research instrument was test sheets which consisted of pretest and posttest. The result of this study showed that there was a significant difference between the experimental group and control group. It was proven by the result of the average score of student. The average result in pretest and posttest in experiment group were 45.63 and 68.28. Meanwhile, the average result in pretest and posttest in control group were 38.75 and 49.38. It showed that there was a significant difference from the use of the Quizizz application as a learning media. The result from the independent sample test showed that the t-test (3,938) was higher than t-table (1,670). In this study, the researcher found that there was a significant difference after using Quizizz as a learning media. Therefore,, it can be concluded that the use of Quizizz as a learning media had proven to be effective for improving the student English reading skills of eighth grade SMP Negeri 2 Tarakan.

AN ANALYSIS OF HIGHER ORDER THINKING SKILLS IN READING SKILL AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT 2018 Abstract This study aimed at finding empirical evidences of higher order thinking skills (HOTS) distribution based on revised Bloom Taxonomy on the multiple-choice items in reading exercises of reading practices used in the English Dept. especially those provided for the students of 2018 intake. This employed a content analysis method to identify specific features of the questions items. The data were collected from the documents of reading exercises, table of check lists, table analysis and interview. The findings show that the HOTS (Higher order thinking skills) were only found in 44% of the question items (11 of 25 questions), meanwhile the rest was included in the lower order category. Among those of HOTS items, the most was analysis skills (24%), followed by evaluating skills (16%), and another skill of making/creating was only (4%). Thus, it can concluded that HOTS item was still very low and needed to be improved. Keywords: questions items of reading, reading skills, HOTS, analyzing, evaluation, creating.
