The purpose of the research was to analyze translation errors and difficulties based on the implementation methods used by the students. This research applied a type of qualitative research with a case study model. The sample of the research consisted of six interviewees, consisting of three students from class Al and three others from class A2 of the sixth semester at the Department of English Education, Borneo University Tarakan. There were two instruments of the research, namely the interview guide and documentation, there were students' academic reports to be analyzed and six questions in the structured interview test. In the process of analyzing the translation, the researcher used the translation method based on Newmark's theory. The results showed that the students only used two methods to translate the text the word-for-word translation method and the free translation method. The researcher found that the students who used the free translation method produced different translation results due to their creativity and understanding of similar contexts. Students also have difficulty with the use of free translation in determining the correct grammar and context for the sentence. On the other hand, the users of the word-for-word translation method have similar translation results among students who refer to the literal word translation method, most of them also have translation results that are out of the context of the sentence in terms of the literal meaning of the source language to the target language. Students also expressed difficulties with word-for-word translation, with students struggling to find the context of the sentence and the correct use of grammar for their translations.

Abstract This study aimed to describe the problem grammar equivalence found in the translation of descriptive texts. This research used a qualitative approach. Data were collected by giving tests to students and the collected data were analyzed using a descriptive method. Using stratified random sampling, 54 students from the English education department of the University of Borneo Tarakan were taken as the study samples. The result of the study showed that the most common problem was in the category of person in the form of possessive adjective and personal pronoun. Then, followed by the number category where the problem was in the translation of plural SL into singular TL. For the gender category, the problem found was in translating SL masculine to TL because it was not in context. For the tense category, there were no structural differences in the Indonesian language and the problem faced by the translators was on the use of time information. In the voice category, there were no structural changes in both English and Indonesian, just a matter of choosing the wrong words.

The critical t-table value (2000) was greater than and the calculated t value (2,256). The probablity was lasser than the level of significance (0,0280,05). In the other worrds, the null hypotesis (HO) was rejected and the alternative hypotesis (Ha) was accepted.
