THE USE OF DUOLINGO BASED LEARNING IN ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILLS: A CASE STUDY AT SMPN 3 TARAKAN ABSTRACT This research examines the use of Duolingo-based learning as a technology-assisted approach to develop speaking skills at SMPN 3 Tarakan. Using a qualitative case study design, the study involved three junior high school students with different levels of English proficiency high achievers (S1), average achievers (S2), and low achievers (S3) as participants. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and documentation during three sessions conducted in May 2025. Findings indicate progressive improvement in six indicators of speaking skills (active engagement, fluency, accuracy, interaction skills, confidence, and adaptability) in all three participants over the observation period, albeit at different rates according to individual proficiency levels. (S1) demonstrated consistent and strong performance across all dimensions, (S2) showed significant improvement, particularly in fluency and interaction skills, while (S3) demonstrated the most significant affective shift, moving from communicative withdrawal and language anxiety in the initial session to greater participation and resilience in the final session. Additionally, this study examined how students used and perceived Duolingo-based learning across three sub-dimensions: prior experience with the app, perceived impact on speaking development, and expectations for technology-mediated learning. All three participants reported generally positive perceptions, recognizing Duolingo's low-pressure, game-based environment as supportive of pronunciation awareness, vocabulary development, and communicative confidence. The study concluded that the use of Duolingo-based learning as a supplementary resource within a structured EFL speaking program can result in meaningful communicative improvements across a range of learner achievement levels, particularly when combined with classroom-based communicative instruction.

Aplikasi mobile menjadi kebutuhan penting dalam mendukung pengelolaan informasi organisasi mahasiswa. Pada Himpunan Mahasiswa Teknik Komputer (HMTK), penyebaran informasi dan koordinasi kegiatan telah memanfaatkan media digital, namun pengelolaan agenda, absensi, pengumuman, serta evaluasi partisipasi kegiatan masih belum terpusat dalam satu sistem. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan aplikasi mobile “TechConnect” sebagai media layanan informasi HMTK dengan menerapkan metode Mobile Application Development Life Cycle (MADLC) dan dua tahapan Smart Analytics, yaitu analisis deskriptif dan analisis diagnostik. Pengembangan sistem dilakukan berdasarkan kebutuhan pengguna yang diperoleh melalui observasi dan wawancara. Aplikasi “TechConnect” dibangun menggunakan Flutter dengan bahasa pemrograman Dart dan memanfaatkan Firebase Authentication untuk proses autentikasi pengguna serta Cloud Firestore sebagai media penyimpanan data. Fitur utama aplikasi meliputi Dashboard, pengumuman, agenda kegiatan, absensi, QnA, forum diskusi internal pengurus, struktur kepengurusan, profil pengguna, serta halaman admin untuk pengelolaan data. Smart Analytics pada aplikasi ini mengolah data agenda dan absensi menggunakan pendekatan rule-based untuk menyajikan statistic jumlah kegiatan per semester, tingkat partisipasi audiens, tingkat keaktifan anggota, serta insight yang mendukung proses monitoring dan evaluasi kegiatan himpunan. Pengujian aplikasi dilakukan menggunakan Blackbox Testing yang menunjukkan bahwa seluruh fitur utama aplikasi berjalan sesuai skenario yang telah ditetapkan. Selanjutnya dilakukan Usability Testing dengan melibatkan 20 responden yang terdiri dari 2 admin, 9 pengurus, dan 9 mahasiswa. Hasil Usability Testing menunjukkan bahwa kelompok admin memperoleh persentase sebesar 77% dengan kategori baik, sedangkan kelompok pengurus dan mahasiswa memperoleh persentase masing-masing sebesar 93,92% dan 92,1% dengan kategori sangat baik. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian tersebut, aplikasi mobile “TechConnect” mampu mendukung layanan informasi, pengelolaan kegiatan, absensi, komunikasi internal, serta monitoring dan evaluasi kegiatan HMTK secara terintegrasi melalui implementasi Smart Analytics berbasis analisis deskriptif dan analisis diagnostik.

Penelitian ini dilakukan bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi efektivitas penggunaan aplikasi Bussu dalam pembelajran speaking siswa kelas VIII di SMPN 1 Tarakan, dengan melibatkan 32 siswa sebagai peserta. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan Pre- experimental reaseach design. Data yang dikumpulkan dalam penelitian ini adalah data test dan observasi selama treatment diberikan. Pre test dan post test dilakukan dalam bentuk individual speaking test yang difokuskan pada aspek pengucapan, kelancaran, kosakata, tata bahasa dan pemahaman. Treatment dilakukan selama empat kali pertemuan dengan menggunakan aplikasi Busuu. Data dianalisis secara kuantitatif menggunakan statistik deskriptif dan statistik infrensial statistik dalam bentuk uji normalitas, homogenitas dan uji hipotesis dengan menggunakan paired t-test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan nilai rata-rata pre test siswa adalah 41.88 dengan standar deviasi 16.319, sedangkan nilai rata -rata post test meningkat menjadi 53.50 dengan standar deviasi 14.644, mencerminkan peningkatan signifikan sebesar 11.62, untuk masing-masing aspek, aspek yang paling berprogres adalah aspek pengucapan, pemahaman dan kosakata. Uji hipotesis menunjukkan signifikansi efektivitas penggunaan Aplikasi Busuu adalah, 0.001 hasil ini menindikasikan (Ha) ditolak, (Ho) diterima. Fitur yang paling dominan dari aplikasi Busuu yang digunakan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa yaitu, percakapan, mendengarkan dan ulangi. Aplikasi ini akan sangat maksimal jika disertai dengan mengunakan metode mengajar role play, discussion dan juga jumble teknik. This study aims to analyze the legal protection afforded to consumers engaging in digital transactions through the QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard) application. Based on the research background, two primary issues are addressed: first, the form of legal protection available to consumers in digital transactions via the QRIS application; and second, the challenges and legal remedies for issues arising in such transactions. Based on the results of the research, the issue of legal protection for consumers in digital transactions through the QRIS application shows that although various regulations governing consumer protection already exist, their implementation has not yet been carried out optimally. Consumers still face risks such as transaction failures, personal data breaches, and unclear allocation of responsibility among the parties involved. Therefore, increased supervision, law enforcement, and consumer education are required so that the use of QRIS can provide more effective and fair legal protection. Legal resolution of QRIS transaction disputes for consumers can be pursued through complaints to payment system service providers, non-litigation dispute resolution through the Consumer Dispute Settlement Agency (BPSK), reporting to Bank Indonesia or the Financial Services Authority (OJK), as well as civil lawsuits filed in court based on the Consumer Protection Law. The effectiveness of these mechanisms depends on the compliance of service providers and the level of consumers’ legal literacy.

his study aims to describe the implementation of the CAKE application in English reading learning and to determine students' responses to its use among seventh-grade students at SMPN 14 Tarakan. This study was motivated by the low English reading skills of students due to limited vocabulary, difficulty in understanding sentence structure, and low student interest in English reading texts. To overcome these problems, this study utilizes the CAKE application as a Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) based learning medium. This study uses a qualitative descriptive design supported by simple quantitative data. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires, then analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the implementation of the CAKE application can be carried out well through systematic learning stages and the application of learning strategies such as scaffolding, collaborative learning, and continuous feedback. Students' responses to the use of the CAKE application show a positive trend, especially in increased interest in learning, vocabulary comprehension, and reading comprehension. However, this study also identified several obstacles, including time constraints, differences in students' technological abilities, and technical barriers such in limited devices and internet connectivity. Overall, the CAKE application has the potential to be a supporting medium for English reading learning for seventh-grade students.

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Let's Read application in enhancing tenth-grade students' reading skills at SMKN 2 Tarakan. It employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest model, involving 24 students selected through non-probability sampling. Data were gathered using reading comprehension tests administered before and after the intervention using the Let's Read application. During the treatment period, students interacted with narrative texts through the application, accompanied by structured assignment activities. The data were then analyzed using SPSS 26 software, including descriptive statistics, normality and homogeneity tests, and paired sample t-tests. The results revealed a significant improvement in students' reading comprehension, with a p-value of 0.045, confirming the effectiveness of the application. These findings support the integration of digital tools such as Let's Read in English language teaching to increase student engagement and improve learning outcomes.

Vocabulary mastery is a major challenge students face in learning English, particularly at the junior high level, due to limited language exposure and ineffective learning strategies. This study investigates the effect of using the Cake application on the vocabulary knowledge of seventh-grade students at SMPN 7 Tarakan. A pre-experimental design was employed involving one class consisting of 32 students. The research instrument was a written vocabulary test administered before and after the treatment. The treatment was conducted over six sessions using the Cake application as the learning medium. The results indicate that the students' mean score increased from 58.59 in the pre-test to 78.00 in the post-test. This improvement was influenced by Cake's features, including contextual short videos, native speaker pronunciation, interactive quizzes, and daily reviews that helped strengthen vocabulary comprehension and retention. Based on the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, the significance value was below 0.05, thereby confirming the acceptance of Ha and the rejection of Ho. These findings suggest that the Cake application effectively improves students' vocabulary knowledge and can be an alternative medium for teaching English vocabulary in schools.

Kemampuan berbicara bahasa inggris menjadi sangat penting, karena kemampuan ini mengekspresikan pikiran, perasaan, dan ide dalam situasi nyata melalui proses yang dinamik dan interaktif untuk tujuan personal dan profesional. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi efek dari penggunaan aplikasi ELSA Speak terhadap kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas 10 MAN Tarakan. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pra-eksperimen. Sampel dari penelitian ini adalah kelas X-5 yang terdiri dari 33 siswa, yang diseleksi menggunakan cluster random sampling. Tahapan penelitiannya adalah pre-test, treatment, dan post-test. Treatmen diberikan selama 5 pertemuan. Pre-test dan post-test difokuskan untuk menguji kemampuan bahasa inggris dalam aspek pelafalan, tata bahasa, kosakata, kelancaran, dan pemahaman. Data pre-test dan post-test dianalisis secara statistik menggunakan non-parametrik Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test. Hasil analisis statistik menunjukkan bahwa nilai p-value 0,00 jauh dibawah standar operasional 0,05 dengan nilai Z score -5.152 mengindikasikan bahwa perlakuan dengan menggunakan aplikasi ELSA Speak menunjukkan efek yang signifikan terhadap kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas 10 MAN Tarakan. Fitur ’study by topic’ pada aplikasi ELSA Speak menjadi fitur yang paling membantu dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa karena menyediakan latihan berbicara yang kontekstual dan relevan dengan situasi kehidupan nyata. English speaking skill is very crucial because this ability expresses thoughts, feelings, and ideas in real situations through a dynamic and interactive process for personal and professional purposes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of using ELSA Speak application on speaking skill of 10th grade students of MAN Tarakan. The method employed in this study was a pre-experimental. The sample of this study was class X-5 consisting of 33 students, who were selected through cluster random sampling. The stages of the study were pre-test, treatments, and post-test. Treatment was given for 5 meetings. The pre-test and post-test focused on testing English language skills in the aspects of pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Pre-test and post-test data were analysed statistically using the non-parametric Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test. The results of the statistical analysis showed that the p-value of 0.00 was far below the operational standard of 0 05 with a Z score of -5.152 indicating that the treatments using ELSA Speak application showed a significant effect on speaking skill of 10th grade students of MAN Tarakan. The 'study by topic feature in ELSA Speak application was the most effective feature in improving students' speaking skill because it provided contextual and relevant speaking exercises to real-life situations.

Kemajuan teknologi informasi diera sekarang telah banyak mengalami perubahan yang signifikan, salah satu contoh perkembangan tersebut terdapat dalam sistem keamanan pada aplikasi web saat ini. Sistem keamanan tersebut sangat banyak ditemui serangan dan ancaman yang mengakibatkan data-data mengalami perubahan dari bentuk aslinya. Portyang terbuka dalam situs web seringkali menjadi celah bagi pelaku kejahatan internet yang mampu menyebabkan terjadinya peretasan data oleh pihak tertentu. Oleh sebab itu, diperlukannya security sistem dalam mencegah hal tersebutyang dimana pada penelitian ini menggunakan Web Application Firewall(WAF) sebagai salah satu metode untuk keamanan pada aplikasi web, yang dapat mencegah adanya ancaman dari attacker. Modsecurity merupakan salah satu jenis Web Application Firewall, seperti firewallyang dapat melakukan blocking trafficyang dianggap berbahaya sesuai degan ruleyang ditetapkan. SQL Injection merupakan salah satu metodeserangan terhadap sistem databaseyang ada pada serverdengan cara mengeksploitasi Structur Query Language(SQL) didalam database. Penelitian ini melibatkan aplikasi web DVWA sebagai target serangan pada web serverapache2 yang telah dikonfigurasikan ke dalam sistem operasi kali linuxyangdilakukansebanyak 30 kali percobaan dalam melihat efektifitas dari WAF modsecuritytersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa efektifitas WAF modsecuritydalam melindungi aplikasi web 99% berhasil serta memenuhi syarat yang telah ditetapkan oleh standar keamanan OWASPWeb Security Testing Guidesedangkan 1% dari kegagalanpengujiannya dikarenakan tidak terbacanya databasepengguna pada aplikasi web DVWA.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the ELSA Speak application on the speaking skills of eleventh grade Pharmacy students at SMK Kesehatan KALTARA. This study employed a pre-experimental design with one class pre-test and post-test with four meetings involving 21 students. The assessment of speaking skills was focused on 5 aspects; fluency, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and comprehension. The descriptive text was chosen for evaluating students' speaking skills which focused on the theme of health, including subtopics such as diseases, medicines, health workers, and medical devices. The results of statistical analysis through paired sample t-test showed a significance value of p = 0.000 (p 0.05), which indicated that the use of the ELSA Speak application had a positive effect on students' speaking skills and it was an effective and interesting learning tool to improve spoken English skills.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Cake application on the speaking skill of eighth grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah Boarding School Tarakan. This study employed a pre-experimental design with one class pre-test and post-test with four meetings involving 18 students. The assessment of speaking skill was focused on 5 aspects; grammar, vocabulary, fluency, pronunciation, and comprehension. The descriptive text used for evaluating students’ speaking skill which focused on the theme of Independence Day. The result of statistical analysis through paired sample t-test showed significance value of p = 0.000 (p 0.05), which indicated that the use of the Cake application had a positive effect on students’ speaking skill and it was an effective and interesting learning tool to improve spoken English skill.

Abstrak: Bahasa Indonesia Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat implementasi aplikasi Duolingo dalam pengembangan kosakata Bahasa inggris pada siswa kelas delapan di SMPN 5 Tarakan. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain deskriptif kualitatif dengan jumlah partisipan sebanyak 32 siswa. Data yang di hasil dalam penelitian ini adalah dokumen, observasi, dan wanwancara. Data kemudian di analisis secara kualitatif dengan analisis tematik untuk dapat menjawab pertanyaan penelitian. Hasil penelitian menujuk kan bahwa penggunaan aplikasi Duolingo membantu siswa dalam mempelajari kosakata Bahasa inggris. Menurut siswa aplikasi ini sangat positif memberikan manfaat sebagai media pembelajaran dan siswa bisa menggunakan aplikasi ini untuk belajar secara mandiri kapanpun dan dimanapun. Thirty-two students participated in this qualitative descriptive study. This study collected documents, observations, and interviews. Subsequently, the data underwent a qualitative thematic analysis in order to address the study questions. The findings of the study demonstrated that students could enrich their vocabulary in English through the Duolingo application. The students' feedback explained that this application served as an excellent learning tool that allowed them to study on their own at any time and place. The purpose of this study was to find out whether students at SMK Negeri 2 Tarakan who received instruction through the Padlet application as a medium and those who received instruction through traditional media had different writing skill. Class Ten Automotive Body Engineering (TBO) 1 was the experimental class in this study, while class Ten Automotive Body Engineering (TBO) 3 was the control class that was selected through the use of the purposive sampling technique. The research methodology employed in this study was a quasi-experimental method, and the design form selected was non-equivalent control design. The data were examined by researcher using the independent sample t-test. The study's findings indicated that when it came to teaching students' writing skill, there was a noticeable difference between those who learned using the Padlet application as a medium and those who learned using traditional books. The hypothesis test findings showed that the significant factor was, on average, less than 0.05. This was supported by the t- test, which came out at 0.000 smaller than 0.05 and an N-gain score of 0.3410 higher than 0.30. According to the data, Ho was rejected while Ha was accepted. Ha claimed a significant increase in students' writing skill through the Padlet application as a medium for practicing writing skill for tenth grade students at SMK Negeri 2 Tarakan.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether there were differences between students who are taught using the BBC learning English application as a medium with students are taught using conventional methods (audio visual) in terms of ability speaking tenth grade students at SMAN 1 Tarakan. Methods used in this research, it is a quasi-experimental method, the form of design chosen in this research, nonequivalent control design is the object in this study, tenth grade F was the experimental class and tenth grade I as a control class taken using purposive sampling technique. Researchers used the independent sample t-test to examine the data. The results of this research show that there are significant differences between students taught using the BBC learning English application as media with students taught using conventional methods (audio visual) in teaching students' speaking skills. As a result, the hypothesis test determines that the significant factor is smaller than 0.05, and the resulting t test (3.664) is stronger than the t-table (1.666). The data shows that Ha is accepted, and Ho rejected. Ha claims significant improvement in speaking ability students use the BBC learning English application as a training medium speaking skills of tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Tarakan.

Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) ini merupakan penelitian yang dilakukan pada siswa kelas VII-1 SMP Negeri 11 Tarakan yang memiliki permasalahan dalam menulis teks prosedur. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis teks prosedur dengan model pembelajaran project based learninng dalam aplikasi Tiktok siswa kelas VII-1. Subjek penelitian siswa kelas VII-1 yang berjumlah 30 siswa yang terdiri dari 16 siswa laki-laki dan 14 siswi perempuan. Penelitian PTK ini terdiri dari dua siklus yang tiap siklusnya terdiri dari perencanaan, pelaksanaan, pengamatan, dan refleksi. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan meliputi dari obervasi, tes dan dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan ada dua yaitu teknik penelitian kualitatif dan teknik penelitian kuantitatif. Instrument penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu lembar pengamatan keaktifan siswa, lembar kognitf, lembar afektif, lembar psikomotorik, dan lembar video. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian pada siklus I pada lembar pengamatan keaktifan siswa 52%, aspek kognitif 26% aspek afektif 60% dan aspek psikomotorik 55% sedangkan pada siklus II mengalami peningkatan dalam menulis teks prosedur dengan media aplikasi Tiktok hal ini dapat dibuktikan dengan lembar pengamatan aktivitas siswa meningkat menjadi 84%, aspek kognitif meningkat menjadi 76%, aspek afektif meningkat menjadi 85%, dan aspek psikomotorik meningkat menjadi 80% . Dapat disimpulkan pada bahwa menulis teks prosedur menggunakan model pembelajaran project based learning dalam aplikasi Tiktok siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 11 Tarakan mampu meningkatkan kemampuan siswa menulis teks prosedur. This Classroom Action Research (PTK) conducted on class VII-1 students of SMP Negeri 11 Tarakan who had problems in writing procedural texts. This research aimed to improve the ability to write procedural texts using a project based learning model in the Tiktok application for class VII-1 students. The subjects of this research were 30 students in class VII-1, consisting of 16 male students and 14 female students. This Classroom Action Research consists of two cycles, each cycle consisting of planning, implementation, observation and reflection Data collection techniques used include observation, tests and documentation Data analysis techniques use two methods, namely qualitative and quantitative. The research instruments used were student activity observation sheets, cognitive sheets, affective sheets, psychomotor sheets, and video sheets Based on the results of research in cycle I on the student activity observation sheet, the results obtained were 52%, cognitive aspects 26%, affective aspects 60%, and psychomotor aspects 55% Meanwhile, in cycle Il there was an increase in writing procedural texts using the Tiktok application as evidenced by the student activity observation sheet, the results increased to 84%, the cognitive aspect increased to 76%, the affective aspect increased to 85%, and the psychomotor aspect increased to 80% From the research results, it can be concluded that writing procedural texts using the project based learning model in the Tiktok application for class VII-1 students at SMP Negen 11 Tarakan is able to improve students' writing skills in procedural texts

The purpose of this research was to measure students' perception about the use of Google Meet (G-Meet) in teaching English in the seventh grade of SMPN 3 Tanjung Selor. This research used a descriptive quantitative design. The subjects of this research were all students of class VII A. The researcher utilized a Google Forms questionnaire with a Likert scale to collect the data. The finding showed that there were 19 (67%) neutral student perceptions, which outnumbered the 11 (33%) positive and 2 (1%) negative ones. The perception of the student learned from the investigation was neutral. With a perception score 40.2, it meant that the students were capable in utilizing the Google Meet application. Thus, it was determined that students' perception of using Google Meet application for learning both inside and outside of the classroom were favorable.

The purpose of the research was to describe the students' perceptions of the efficient use of applications in online learning in English Education Department students of University of Borneo Tarakan. This research was quantitative research. sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The number of samples was 60 respondents. The instrument of the research was a questionnaire. The results of the research showed that the use of applications in online learning in the Covid-19 pandemic were very efficient because the applications were a good way or alternative to carry out learning activities from home. The online learning applications were used by the students such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Zoom, Google Classroom, and Google Meet. The applications used were considered efficient to help the learning process. It might be able to improve the students' English skills. The applications used during online learning also facilitate the learning because of the ease of access to weak signals, not using too much internet quota, economical, good enough features to support learning. Although it supported the learning process, some students still found some difficulties in online learning using online learning applications.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using the quizizz application as as a learning media to improve student reading skills. This research used a quasi-experimental method and the population was all the students of class VIII at SMP Negeri 2 Tarakan for the academic year of 2021/2022. The sampling technique was carried out by the purposive sampling with a sample of 64 students. The instrument was prepared by looking at some indicators from syllabus and lesson plan (RPP) for data collection. This research instrument was test sheets which consisted of pretest and posttest. The result of this study showed that there was a significant difference between the experimental group and control group. It was proven by the result of the average score of student. The average result in pretest and posttest in experiment group were 45.63 and 68.28. Meanwhile, the average result in pretest and posttest in control group were 38.75 and 49.38. It showed that there was a significant difference from the use of the Quizizz application as a learning media. The result from the independent sample test showed that the t-test (3,938) was higher than t-table (1,670). In this study, the researcher found that there was a significant difference after using Quizizz as a learning media. Therefore,, it can be concluded that the use of Quizizz as a learning media had proven to be effective for improving the student English reading skills of eighth grade SMP Negeri 2 Tarakan.

The goal of this research was to assess students’ vocabulary mastery using the Simpler application. This type of research was pre-experimental. Purposive sampling was applied in this study, and the study selected one class as the research sample from VII-3, consisting of 31 students at SMPN 7 Tarakan. The t-test was used to analyze the data. The data analysis revealed that the students’ score before treatment was 48.19, and after treatment, there was a significant increase of 78.00. It was concluded that the Simpler application was able to make significant progress toward students’ vocabulary mastery. This study has implications for the use of media in English learning, and the Simpler application has a positive impact on teaching vocabulary.
