AN ANALYSIS OF EIGHTH GRADERS' READING SKILL PROBLEMS AT MTS NEGERI TARAKAN THROUGH BROWN'S THEOR Y Abstract This study aims to analyze the reading skill challenges faced by eighth-grade students at MTs Negeri Tarakan using Brown's theory. This study focused on identifying the specific problems students encountered in reading English texts based on Brown's theory and analyzing the factors that contributed to these difficulties. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques consisting of documentation, observation, and semi-structured interviews. The research subjects consisted of six eighth-grade students from Class VIII-D, selected through a purposive sampling technique based on various levels of reading proficiency, and an English teacher. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which consisted of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions, with source triangulation to ensure data validity. The research findings revealed that the reading difficulties experienced by students stem from limited vocabulary, poor understanding of sentence structure, and problems with fluency and pronunciation. In addition, psychological factors such as anxiety, low motivation, and a lack of self-confidence also play a major role in exacerbating students' reading difficulties. This study further indicates that anxiety about using a foreign language significantly affects reading comprehension, leading students to avoid active reading activities. Therefore, it can be concluded that students' reading difficulties are not only cognitive and linguistic in nature but are also heavily influenced by affective factors that create an "emotional filter" in the English language learning process.

In this study, the researcher describes about "Reading Comprehension Difficulties in Second Semester Students of English Education Department of Borneo University Tarakan". This research focuses on students' comprehension difficulties in reading. In this study, the researcher identifies problem factors by looking at several indicators, namely reading words, fluency, vocabulary and knowledge. This research will use a qualitative method with a descriptive approach that seeks to describe a phenomenon and problem by drawing a conclusion orally or in writing. In this study, researchers took 7 second semester students of class A2 as informants. As for data collection, researchers used observation, interviews and questionnaires as research instruments. Researchers used three main phases in analyzing research data, namely data reduction, data presentation, and verification of conclusions. From the data analysis, the researcher found student problems and the causes of problems in student reading comprehension, namely the lack of vocabulary and word knowledge is the main obstacle in reading so that this affects other aspects such as word reading and fluency, this will be a little more difficult when a student feels embarrassed or hesitant when ordered by the lecturer to discuss the reading results. Based on the above problems, the researcher draws one conclusion, namely the lack of vocabulary owned by students and their curiosity about new vocabulary or not enriching vocabulary.

The purpose of the research was to analyze the students’ difficulties and the causes of the students’ difficulties in translating English text into Indonesia for eighth grade students at SMPN 9 Tarakan. The research used was descriptive-qualitative method. The researcher used the purposive sampling technique in selecting the sample. Class VIII-3 was the sample for the research, totaling 32 students. To collect the data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion: drawing or verifying. The research result show that the students’ difficulties and the causes of difficulty occurred when the students translated English text into Indonesia, namely are still very lacking in the process of translation; the average student is in the poor category (81%), and only few students get fair (6%), good (16%). The percentage shows that students still have difficulties translating English texts into Indonesian.

The purpose of this research was to identify the ability of students in writing in writing a recount text and to find out the difficulties faced by students in writing tje text. This research used a qualitative descriptive method. As a research sample, 32 grade X stufent from SMA Negeri 08 Malinau Barat were chosen using purposive sampling method. The instruments in this research were observation, questionnaire and interview. The researcher utilized code to examine the data. According to Denscombe (2010), the key to qualitative analysis is to link the identification process and data interpretation. The results of analysis showede that students made the most mistakes in terms of of language use. The cause behind the difficulty was the lack of students in practicing writing and also the lack of knowledge in the form of grammar. As a result, in order to solve the issue, students needed to become better writers because their proficiency in language use and mechanics was still low. Teachers also needed to create more opportunities for students to practice writing as well as strategies, materials, and teaching tecqniques that concentrated on language use and mechanics and enhanced student’s profiecienty, particularly in recount text writing.

Penelitian ini bermaksud untuk mendeskripsikan hasil analisis kesukaran dan keterbacaan soal ujian akhir semester ganjil kelas X mata pelajaran Bahasa Indonesia di SMA Hang Tuah Tarakan. Skripsi ini merupakan penelitian jenis deskripsi kuantitatif. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini adalah berupa hasil penilain, naskah soal dan wacana-wacana soal ujian akhir semester ganjil kelas X mata pelajaran bahasa Indonesia di SMA Hang Tuah Tarakan tahun pelajaran 2022/2023. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara dokumentasi dan wawancara. Analisis data dilakukan berdasarakan tingkat kesukaran dan tingkat kerbacaan soal wacana menggunakan Grafik Fry. Hasil dari penelitian adalah: pertama, analisis kesukaran soal ujian akhir semester ganjil kelas X mata pelajaran Bahasa Indonesia di SMA Hang Tuah Tarakan. Disimpulkan bahwa dari enam kelas hanya ada dua kelas yang memuhi syarat yaitu kelas X-E dan X-F soal sedang mencapai 20 butir soal (50%). Kedua, analisis keterbacaan soal ujian akhir semester ganjil kelas X mata pelajaran Bahasa Indonesia di SMA Hang Tuah Tarakan. Disimpulkan dari 10 soal wacana ada 4 soal yang sesuai, ada 5 soal tidak sesuai, dan 1 soal invalid. Soal perlu dilakukan revisi dan diperbaiki untuk dapat diujikan kembali pada tes selanjutnya. Kata Kunci: Tingkat Kesukaran, Tingkat Keterbacaan, dan Grafik Fry This study aimed to describe the results of the analysis pf the difficulty and readability of the odd semester final exam questions for class X Indonesian at SMA Hang Tuah Tarakan. The method used was quantitative description research and the sources on odd semester-end exam questions to class X for the Indonesian language subject at SMA Hang Tuah Tarakan in the 2022/2023 academic year. Data collection is done through documentation and interviews. Data analysis was carried our based on the level of difficulty and the readability of the discourse questions using Graphics Fry. The results of the study are; first, an analysis of the difficulty of the odd semester final exam questions for class X indonesian at SMA Hang Tuah Tarakan. It was concluded that out of the six classes, there were only two classes that met the requirements, they are X-E and X-F classes, the average number of questions reached 20 items (50%). Second, an analysis of the readability of the odd semester final exam questions for class X indonesia subject at SMA Hang Tuah Tarakan. It was concluded that of the 10 discourse questions, there were 4 appropriate question, 5 inappropriate questions, and 1 invalid question. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kesulitan siswa didalam menyusun struktur generik dalam menulis teks recount dan untuk mengetahui kesulitan dominan yang dilakukan siswa dalam menulis teks recount. Metodologi penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode campuran dimana peneliti menggabuungkan data kualitatif dan data kuantitatif untuk memperoleh data. Peneliti menggunakan penelitian deskriptif untuk menyampaikan hasil penelitian. Dalam teknik pengumpulan data, penelitian ini menggunakan hasil test menulis siswa, angket, dan wawancara. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas delapan SMP Negeri 1 Tanjung Selor sebagai populasi dengan jumlah 252 siswa. Sampel yang digunakan sebanyak 51 siswa dari delapan kelas menggunakan teknik stratified random sampling. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kesulitan siswa pada saat menulis terdapat lima aspek yaitu konten, organisasi, kosa kata, grammar, dan mekanik. Diantara lima aspek tersebut sebanyak 43.86% siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam grammar, 26.31% siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam aspek mekanik, 17.55% siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam konten, 11.40% siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam aspek organisasi, dan 0.88% dalam aspek kosa kata. Berdasarkan persentase berikut terlihat bahwa yang menjadi kesulitan dominan siswa adalah grammar. Hal ini disebabkan oleh kurangnya pengetahuan siswa dengan arti dan tujuan dari teks recount tersebut. Kata Kunci: Kesulitan Siswa, Menulis, Teks Recount. This study aimed to describe the difficulties of students in compiling a generic structure in writing recount texts and to find out the dominant difficulties that students have in writing recount texts. The research methodology used was a mixed method in which the researcher combined qualitative and quantitative data to obtain data. The researcher applied descriptive research to convey the research results. In data collection techniques, this study applied the results of students' writing tests, questionnaires, and interviews. The subjects of this study were eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Tanjung Selor a population of 252 students. The sample was 51 students from eight classes using the stratified random sampling technique. The results showed that there were five aspects of students' difficulties in writing, namely: content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. Among these five aspects, 43.86% of students have difficulty with grammar, 26.31% of students have difficulty in the mechanical aspect, 17.55% of students have difficulty with content, and 11.40% of students have difficulty in the organizational aspect, and 0.88% in vocabulary aspect. Based on the following percentage, it can be seen that the dominant difficulty for students was grammar. This is caused by the lack of students' knowledge of the meaning and purpose of the recount text. Keywords: Student Difficulty, Writing, Recount Text.

The research was aimed at describing students’ difficulty in writing a descriptive text. This was descriptive qualitative research .The subject was student of eight grad student SMPN5 Tarakan. This employed three data collection techiqnues ; observation, interview,and documentation. The data were analyzed by using mile and Huberman’s interactive model. Based on the data analysis, it can be drawn some conclusion: 1) from the observation, there was need of more explanation from the teacher to direct thestudents in building there writing style,2) the interview data showed the almost all the students had a difficulty triggered by their limited mastery of English Vocabulary. This problem had put them in an uneasy situation as they were listening in English, speaking in English, reading text, and doing their writing task, and 3) from the document it was proved that a direct teaching was better for promoting the student’s participation than the online meeting; they were nore active in a conventional teaching. In an online class teacher did not provide anadeuate expalation about the topic; the teacher preferred to give them taks and assignment . Yet the students did not have much better situation in direct-meeting classes, as the teacher’s explanation filed to address the issue . Basides, the teacher did not try to engage their students in the learning process.

The purpose of this research was to describe the students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text and to find out the solution of students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text of tenth graders in SMA Frater Don Bosco Tarakan in academic year 2020/2021. This research is descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected from written test and interview. The research finding showed that the students have difficulties in linguistic aspect and non linguistic aspect. In linguistic aspect included grammar, vocabulary and mechanic, while in non linguistic aspect included content and organization. The percentage of this research showed that the students have difficulties in all points of scoring, the highest percentage is 81% of students have difficulty in vocabulary, the second percentage is 72% of students have difficulty in mechanic, the third percentage is 63% of students have difficulty in grammar, the forth percentage is 40% students have difficulty in content, and the last percentage is 31% students have difficulty in organization. Based on the data finding in this research, some suggestions are given to English teacher that the teacher should emphasize to solve the students’ difficulty and also the teacher should learn better to apply the techniques of teaching writing skill. Some suggestions are given the students to learn more enterprising about English, especially in writing descriptive text, pay attention to the teacher when learning, and if anyone does not understand the material then ask the teacher, respect teachers as you respect your parents.

The purpose of this study was to determine and describe the quality of English questions for 7th Grade Students of SMPN 5 Tarakan in the academic year 2019/2020. This research used a descriptive quantitative method. A total of 50 students were took as the research sample using sample ramdom sampling. The data in this study were in the form of question sheets and students answer sheets. The test question sheet consisted of 50 multiple choice questions. Answer sheets were needed for statistical analysis to determine the quality of the items based on question analysis, validity and difficulty level. The result of the data analysis showed that the English semester test questions were 22 items (44%) were valid questions and 28 items (56%) were invalid questions, and 7 items (14%) were at satisfactory validiity level, 19 items (38%) were at poor validity level, 24 items (48%) were at very bad validity level. And the results of difficulty level showed that 19 items (38%) were difficult questions, 22 items (44%) were moderate questions, and 9 items (18%) were easy questions. It was concluded that the items analyzed were classified as bad items because there were only 4 items that could be accepted or could be used without revision, 21 items had to be revised, andd 25 items had to be discarded.

ANGGUN ALVIANTARI. 2021. students difficulties in reading comprehension at eleventh grade in smkn 2 tarakan (Advisor: Ridwan, M.Pd) The purpose of this study was to find learning difficulties in reading comprehension from grade 11 students at SMKN 2 Tarakan. The design of this research is descriptive quantitative. The population of this study is all grade 11 in SMKN 2 Tarakan student year 2020/2021. This study used purposive sampling in editing samples. Grade 11 students of 100 students were sampled from the study. The instrument used to retrieve the data in this is a test to work on the question and fill out a questionnaire. Data analysis techniques used are descriptive quantitative. The results of the data analysis showed based on the percentage of difficulty items in the graph, researchers summarized that the comprehension test read the question as follows, Determining Idea got 41.6 percent difficult in the reading test it means that it is categorized on average. Identifying Reference gets a 47.9 percent difficult reading test that means that it's categorized on average. Understanding Vocabulary gets 53.2 percent difficult in a reading test that means that it is categorized on average. Making Inference got a 51.5 percent difficult read test that meant that it categorized the average, and Detail Information got a 41.9 percent difficult reading test that meant that it categorized the average. So based on the results of the analysis shows that students' difficulty in reading comprehension is not too difficult and not too easy because there are still many students who set low grades in the reading comprehension test. Key word: Reading Comprehension, Difficulty Learning Tujuan dari peneltian ini adalah untuk menemukan kesulitan belajar di pemaham membaca dari siswa kelas 11 di SMKN 2 Tarakan. Desain dari peneitian ini adalah deskriptif kuantitatif. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah seluruh kelas 11 di SMKN 2 Tarakan tahun pelajara 2020/2021. Penelitian ini menggunakan purposive sampling dalam menetukan sampel. Siswa kelas 11 terdiri dari 100 siswa adalah sampel dari penelitian ini. Instrument yang digunakan untuk mengambil data dalam ini adalah test mengerjakan soal dan mengisi kuesioner. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kuantitatif. Hasil dari analisis data menunjukan berdasarkan persentase item kesulitan dalam grafik, peneliti dirangkum bahwa tes pemahaman membaca pertanyaan sebagai berikut, Determining Idea mendapat 41,6 persen sulit dalam tes baca itu berarti bahwa itu dikategorikan rata-rata. Identifying Reference mendapat 47,9 persen sulit dalam tes baca itu berarti bahwa itu dikategorikan rata-rata. Pemahaman kosakata mendapat 53,2 persen sulit dalam tes baca itu berarti bahwa itu dikategorikan rata-rata. Membuat kesimpulan mendapat 51,5 persen sulit dalam tes baca itu berarti bahwa itu dikategorikan rata-rata, dan Detail Information mendapat 41,9 persen sulit dalam tes baca itu berarti bahwa itu mengkategorikan rata-rata. Jadi berdasarakan hasil analisis tersebut menunjukuan bahwa kesulitan siswa dalam pemahaman membaca tidak terlalu sulit dan tidak terlalu mudah karena masih banyak siswa yang mendapkan nilai rendah di reading comprehension test.
