English learning media in elementary schools plays an important role in supporting the English language teaching process for young learners. This research aimed to develop augmented reality-based flashcards for vocabulary learning for fifth-grade students at SDN 010 Tarakan. This was a research and development study using the 4D model, consisting of the Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate stages. The research instruments used included student needs questionnaires, interview guides for teachers, expert validation questionnaires for content and media, media usability questionnaires, and student response questionnaires. The results of the needs analysis questionnaire and interviews with teachers indicated that vocabulary learning media were highly needed by students in their English language learning. The designed product consisted of flashcards featuring vocabulary related to parts of the body, hobbies, and things in school, in accordance with the students' needs. The developed media were then validated in terms of content and media before being pilot-tested on 12 fifth-grade students at SDN 010 Tarakan. The research results revealed that the level of suitability and practicality of the media, based on the following assessments, were as follows: 1) validation by a media expert yielded a score of 93.7%, classified as “highly applicable”; 2) validation by a content expert yielded a score of 96.3%, classified as “highly applicable”; 3) 97.1% of English language teaching practitioners rated the material as “highly practical.” Student responses to this learning material following the pilot test were positive, with a score of 91% of the total possible score. Accordingly, it can be concluded that the development of augmented reality-based flashcard learning materials for fifth-grade students at SDN 010 Tarakan was deemed highly feasible and highly practical for use. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of Quizizz on student vocabulary for grade 8 students at SMPN 2 Tarakan for the 2023/2024 academic year. The population of this research was 8th-grade students at SMPN 2 Tarakan, totaling 356 people. The researcher applied purposive sampling techniques to select participants. Thus, the researcher decided on two groups for this study: the experimental and control groups. This study employed a vocabulary test as an instrument to collect data. The data were analyzed using the parametric statistical technique Independent Sample t-test via SPSS. The results demonstrated that the difference in the average pre-test between the two group was 5.55, while the average difference in the post-test between the two groups was 10.82. Second, the results illustrated the significance of the t-test 0.05, meaning there is a significant difference in student learning achievement between the experimental and control groups. The post-test results of the experimental showed that the achievement of students who were given vocabulary through Quizizz was higher than those who were not given vocabulary through Quizizz. In addition, although the control group was not assigned vocabulary through Quizizz, the post-test results of this group also showed significance compared to their pre-test results. To implement engaging learning, teachers at SMP Negeri 2 Tarakan and various other schools can use Quizizz as a learning medium for vocabulary learning.

To master English, students do not only get the materials from what they have learned in the class given by the teachers. They can explore various things to support their understanding on English. Therefore, students are required to independently learn to sharpen their English skills. Sometimes, it is difficult for students to build and develop their English learning attitudes, due the lack of encouragement from parents and teachers to introduce online learning applications to support their English skills, especially on vocabulary. The role of online learning applications is recently very helpful for students to overcome their difficulties in learning vocabulary. The purpose of this research was to figure out the perception of MTs Negeri Tarakan students to the use of Memrise application for their vocabulary learning. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The population was 384 students of MTs Negeri Tarakan and the research samples were 33 male students from grade 7A of MTs Negeri Tarakan collected through a purposive sampling technique. The data were obtained from interviews and questionnaires. The results show that Memrise application could help the students learn English vocabulary. Since Memrise application can be accessed anywhere and anytime, the students can learn vocabulary whenever they want. Thus, the use of Memrise application greatly supported the students’ English learning attitudes to overcome their learning difficulties, especially on vocabulary.

ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES ON LEARNING ENGLISH VOCABULARY OF SMP NEGERI 3 TARAKAN Faculty of Teacher Training And Education, Borneo Tarakan University, Tarakan Elvana Cholil Ahmad Email: [email protected] Advisor : Winarno, M.Pd The vocabulary has a significant contribution to support the successful students of learning English. The objective was to find out the Student difficulties in learning English vocabulary of the eighth- grade of SMP Negeri 3 Tarakan. The researcher had used a descriptive quantitative method. The subjects were the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 3Tarakan in the 2020/2021 academic year. The total population of the researcher was 286 students. The sample had selected by using a simple random sampling technique with 43 students as the sample. The researcher collected the data by using a vocabulary test and a questionnaire. The vocabulary test had used to analyze the factors of difficulties in learning English vocabulary in terms of grammar and meaning. The questionnaire had used to analyze the student's difficulties in learning English vocabulary. The data were analyzed using the descriptive analysis to analyze student difficulties in the form of vocabulary tests and the percentage of the student difficulties in the form of a questionnaire. The results of the research showed. First, from the results of the vocabulary test, 16% of students were difficulty in meaning. Then, 39.5% of students were difficult in grammar. Second, the questionnaire resulted related to the grammar and meaning. Thus, it concluded that First, there are two factors of student difficulties in learning English vocabulary in meaning and grammar. Second, the most dominant student difficulty was grammar.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the difficulties experienced by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Tarakan in learning English vocabulary. It used a descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this study were the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Tarakan in the 2020/2021 academic year. The total student population was 343. The sample was 52 students selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data collection was carried out using test documents, questionnaires, and interviews. The test document was used to analyze the types of difficulties students had in learning vocabulary. The questionnaire was used to analyze the students' most dominant difficulties in learning vocabulary. Interviews were used to find out more about students’ difficulties in learning vocabulary. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis to analyze student difficulties in the form of vocabulary tests and the percentage of student difficulties in the form of questionnaire. The results of this study indicated that; first, from the results of the vocabulary test, there were 10.96% of students who had difficulty in the aspect of meaning. Whereas in the grammar aspect, there were about 43.6% of students who have difficulties. Second, the results of the questionnaire show that 55.8% of students could understand aspects of meaning and 46.6% of students could understand aspects of grammar. Third, the results of interviews with the English teacher showed that the students had a lot of difficulties in grammar. Thus, it was concluded that there are two types of student difficulties in learning vocabulary, namely meaning and grammar. Second, the most dominant difficulty was grammar.
