ABSTRACT This English is one of the subjects that plays an important role for the students. English skills consist of listening, speaking, reading, and writing that must be mastered by the students. During Covid-19 pandemic, English learning was conducted through online learning. The purpose of th study was to determine the perceptions of eight grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Tarakan about online English learning. The researcher used a descripive qualitative method. The subject of the research was eight grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Tarakan. The instruments of the research used were quistionnaires and interview guide. Data were analyzed by using the theory of Miles and Huberman including data collection, data reduction, data display and conclusion: drawing/verifying. The result showed that students preferred offline learning or face-to-face learning than online learning, because when English learning was conducted through some applications, students found it difficult to understand the material presented.

This study intends to find out (1) the type of media used in teaching English and (2) students' perceptions of the media used by the teachers in teaching English. The research data was obtained using a qualitative descriptive method, which was carried out at SMAS FraterDon Bosco Tarakan in September–November 2022. This study's informants were 25 class XI IIS A students. Research data were collected by conducting non-participant observation, in-depth semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. In this case, the researcher also used a questionnaire as a supporting instrument. The findings of this study indicate that the types of media used in teaching English include whiteboards, English books, Powerpoint (laptop&LCD), and Google Chrome(smartphones). Some students have positive perceptions of the media used in the learning process. Students argue that the use of media in the English learning process is effective in facilitating the learning process, supporting the teaching and learning process, making students more confident in learning, making students feel happy and interested in learning, and motivating students to learn. In addition to positive perceptions, some students also had negative perceptions of the media used. These perceptions are that students are less active in learning, the media has not been able to improve students' four-language skills, and teachers are less actively involved in explaining material. These positive and negative perceptions are influenced by several factors that influence perception. These factors include perceiver factors, situation factors, and environmental condition factors. These findings can be used as evaluation material for teachers and other educators.

To master English, students do not only get the materials from what they have learned in the class given by the teachers. They can explore various things to support their understanding on English. Therefore, students are required to independently learn to sharpen their English skills. Sometimes, it is difficult for students to build and develop their English learning attitudes, due the lack of encouragement from parents and teachers to introduce online learning applications to support their English skills, especially on vocabulary. The role of online learning applications is recently very helpful for students to overcome their difficulties in learning vocabulary. The purpose of this research was to figure out the perception of MTs Negeri Tarakan students to the use of Memrise application for their vocabulary learning. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The population was 384 students of MTs Negeri Tarakan and the research samples were 33 male students from grade 7A of MTs Negeri Tarakan collected through a purposive sampling technique. The data were obtained from interviews and questionnaires. The results show that Memrise application could help the students learn English vocabulary. Since Memrise application can be accessed anywhere and anytime, the students can learn vocabulary whenever they want. Thus, the use of Memrise application greatly supported the students’ English learning attitudes to overcome their learning difficulties, especially on vocabulary.

This study aims to describe the perception of EFL students towards the online learning media CloudX class XI at SMK Negeri 1 Tanjung Selor. This study uses a quantitative descriptive approach. Samples were taken as many as 70 respondents from class XI SMK Negeri 1 Tanjung Selor. Data collection techniques are using questionnaires and interview guidelines. The results of the questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis and interview results as supporting information. The results of this study indicate that EFL students provide perceptions of CloudX online learning media from the positive and negative sides. On the positive side, students are helped to take distance learning at home through virtual meetings using the CloudX application. In addition, there are several features such as audio, video, chat rooms, and share screens to support students and teachers in discussing and communicating in the online learning process. Therefore, students can easily understand the learning topic because the teacher can share and explain the material at the same time. Furthermore, the CloudX app also provides a positive experience with students. For example, students can know how to use technology (eg CloudX). However, EFL students also gave negative perceptions of online learning through CloudX. Based on the results of the study, sometimes online learning through CloudX is not effective because there are several obstacles such as students not having a good internet connection and not all students having adequate facilities (such as smartphones or laptops) as supporting devices to attend virtual meetings through CloudX. On the other hand, most students prefer to share and discuss ideas with peers and colleagues, responding to online discussions in traditional face-to-face classes as in normal situations before distance education was implemented.
