This study aims to evaluate the impact of Role Play on enhancing speaking proficiency among eighth-grade students at SMP 12 Tarakan in the academic year 2023/2024. Sampling was conducted using the purposive sampling technique, where the lowest average class scores constituted the experimental group and the highest mean scores formed the control group, each comprising 32 students. Data collection involved oral tests administered twice, namely pre-test and post-test. Data analysis utilised an Independent Sample t-test through SPSS software. The results indicate that both experimental and control groups experienced slight improvements, yet a significant difference in speaking score means between the experimental and control groups was observed at 0.033. The disparity between pre- test and post-test mean scores in both groups demonstrated a more significant enhancement in the experimental group at 0.036. These findings suggest that Role Play usage can enhance students' speaking abilities. As a recommendation, teachers at SMP 12 Tarakan and other schools may consider integrating Role Play as an engaging instructional method to improve students' speaking proficiency.

This study was aimed to find out if the use of board games was able to improve student learning achievement in speaking in class VIII-5 at SMPN 12 Tarakan. This was a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The population in this study were 32 students and the samples were 12 students. The instruments used in this study were observation sheets, and speaking test. There were criteria used to measure success in this research. Students’ speaking test scores had to reach 70.0 and above with percentage of 75%. The data analysis technique in this study used mixed methods. Qualitative analysis to retrieve data from the observation sheet, quantitative analysis to calculate data from the speaking test. The results of the study indicated that the use of board game was able to improve student speaking achievement at each cycle. In the first cycle, class success at the first meeting was 17% while in the second cycle was 75%. It was concluded that the use of board game improved students’ speaking scores. The observation sheet results showed that the learning process was successful. Based on the results of observation sheet, it was known that the use of board game was very useful in creating fun learning activities and improving students’ speaking achievement.

THE EFFECT OF INFORMATION GAP TECHNIQUE IN STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL AT THE EIGHTH GRADERS SMP 11 TARAKAN Abstract This research aims to find out the effect of using the information Gap technique in improving student speaking achievement at eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 11 Tarakan. The method used in this research was quasi-experimental. The population of this research was 58 students. The researcher used purposive sampling in took a sample. In collecting the data, the researcher used a speaking test. Before treatment, the researcher gave Pretest. After that, the researcher gave treatment. After treatment, the researcher gave a posttest. The mean score of each test was compared to know the student's improvement in speaking. The mean score of pretests in the experimental class was 45.17, and in the control, class was 46.90. The mean score of posttests in the experimental class was 70.17, and in the control, class was 65.69. The score of posttests of the experimental class was higher than the control class. The result of the independent sample t-test showed that the t-test (2.204) higher than the t-table (1.673). It was concluded that the information gap technique has a significant effect on student speaking achievement at SMPN 11 Tarakan.

This research was conducted to examine the correlation between students' self-confidence and the speaking achievement at the eleventh grade students of SMKN 1 Tarakan. This is a quantitative research with a correlational design. The population was the eleventh grade students. Using a simple random sampling technique, 85 out of 431 students in the eleventh grade were taken as the research sample. The data were collected using a questionnaire, and the students' speaking achievement were taken from the English subject teacher assessment documents in the first semester of the 2020/2021 school year. The data were analyzed statistically using the Pearson Product Moment with the help of SSS version 22.00, the results showed that there was a significant correlation between self-confidence and speaking ability scores of students as indicated by a significant value (, 000 0, 05) and a value r calculated is greater than the critical value (0.730> 0.210)

ABSTRACT Yemima Kristiani. 2020. The Effectiveness of Using Picture Series to Improve Students’ Speaking Achievement in Narrative Text for XI Grade Jasa Boga 2 at SMK Negeri 1 Tarakan. (Advisor by Romlah Ulfaika, M. Pd). The aim of this research was to find the significant effect of Picture Series to improve students’ speaking achievement in xi grade of SMK Negeri 1 Tarakan. This research was pre-experiment. In this research, the researcher tried to find out the differences before and after being taught using Picture Series. The sample of this research was students in 11 Jasa Boga 2 class which consisted of 27 students at SMK Negeri 1 Tarakan in academic years of 2019/2020. The instrument was picture series that included pretest and posttest. Besides that, the researcher used descriptive analysis, hypothesis testing, and paired samples test for analyzed the statistically. The research result showed that there was different mean score between pretest and posttest. It was proven by the result of the students’ mean score. They were 59.00 in pretest and 75.92 in the posttest. It means that the improvement of the students’ mean score was 16.92. It can be seen that the improvement of students’ mean score in the posttest was higher than pretest and it indicated that there was significant difference from students’ speaking score between pretest and posttest. The result of paired sample test showed that t-test computation was 13.157 higher than t-table (2.056). So, 13.157 > 2.056 it means Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. As the conclusion, picture series were effective to improve students’ speaking achievement eleventh grade of SMK Negeri 1 Tarakan by using picture series.
