THE USE OF DUOLINGO BASED LEARNING IN ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILLS: A CASE STUDY AT SMPN 3 TARAKAN ABSTRACT This research examines the use of Duolingo-based learning as a technology-assisted approach to develop speaking skills at SMPN 3 Tarakan. Using a qualitative case study design, the study involved three junior high school students with different levels of English proficiency high achievers (S1), average achievers (S2), and low achievers (S3) as participants. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and documentation during three sessions conducted in May 2025. Findings indicate progressive improvement in six indicators of speaking skills (active engagement, fluency, accuracy, interaction skills, confidence, and adaptability) in all three participants over the observation period, albeit at different rates according to individual proficiency levels. (S1) demonstrated consistent and strong performance across all dimensions, (S2) showed significant improvement, particularly in fluency and interaction skills, while (S3) demonstrated the most significant affective shift, moving from communicative withdrawal and language anxiety in the initial session to greater participation and resilience in the final session. Additionally, this study examined how students used and perceived Duolingo-based learning across three sub-dimensions: prior experience with the app, perceived impact on speaking development, and expectations for technology-mediated learning. All three participants reported generally positive perceptions, recognizing Duolingo's low-pressure, game-based environment as supportive of pronunciation awareness, vocabulary development, and communicative confidence. The study concluded that the use of Duolingo-based learning as a supplementary resource within a structured EFL speaking program can result in meaningful communicative improvements across a range of learner achievement levels, particularly when combined with classroom-based communicative instruction.

Indonesia : Kosakata merupakan salah satu unsur penting dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang mendukung kemampuan siswa dalam memahami dan menggunakan bahasa secara efektif. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan untuk mengoptimalkan penguasaan kosakata siswa melalui pemanfaatan aplikasi Duolingo sebagai media pembelajaran. Metode yang digunakan adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) yang dilaksanakan dalam dua siklus, meliputi tahap perencanaan, pelaksanaan tindakan, observasi, dan refleksi. Penelitian melibatkan 31 siswa kelas VIII-E SMP Negeri 2 Tarakan tahun ajaran 2025/2026. Data diperoleh melalui tes kosakata dan lembar observasi. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan hasil belajar dari Siklus I ke Siklus II. Persentase ketuntasan belajar meningkat dari 61% menjadi 77%, sedangkan nilai rata-rata siswa naik dari 74,54 menjadi 80,39. Aktivitas guru mengalami peningkatan dari 83% menjadi 92%, sementara aktivitas siswa meningkat dari 78% menjadi 88%. Selain itu, keterlibatan siswa selama pembelajaran terlihat lebih baik dibandingkan sebelumnya. Berbagai fitur yang tersedia dalam Duolingo, seperti latihan berulang, umpan balik langsung, dan aktivitas berbasis permainan, membantu menciptakan pengalaman belajar yang lebih menarik dan interaktif. Dengan demikian, Duolingo dapat digunakan sebagai media yang mendukung peningkatan penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris siswa pada pembelajaran EFL di tingkat sekolah menengah pertama. English: Vocabulary is one of the essential components of English language learning that supports students’ ability to understand and use the language effectively. This research was conducted to improve students’ vocabulary mastery through the use of the Duolingo application as a learning medium. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design consisting of two cycles, including planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The participants were 31 students of class VIII-E at SMP Negeri 2 Tarakan in the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through vocabulary tests and observation sheets. The findings revealed an improvement in students’ learning outcomes from Cycle I to Cycle II. The percentage of students achieving the minimum mastery criterion increased from 61% to 77%, while the mean score improved from 74.54 to 80.39. Teacher activity increased from 83% to 92%, and student activity improved from 78% to 88%. In addition, students demonstrated greater participation and engagement during the learning process. Various features provided by Duolingo, such as repeated practice, immediate feedback, and game-based activities, contributed to creating a more engaging and interactive learning experience. Therefore, Duolingo can be utilized as an effective learning medium to support the improvement of students’ English vocabulary mastery in EFL learning at the junior high school level.

Kosakata memiliki pengaruh besar terhadap kemampuan berbicara, mendengarkan, dan kemampuan kompetensi bahasa lainnya dalam bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh yang signifikan dari media pembelajaran aplikasi Duolingo dalam meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata siswa kelas VII. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode pra-eksperimen. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 1 Tarakan dengan kelas VII.10 sebagai sampel yang terdiri dari 31 siswa. Instrumen penelitian yang digunakan adalah pre-test dan post-test. Selanjutnya, hasil analisis data yang diperoleh diolah dengan menggunakan program SPSS versi 30. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata hasil pre-test adalah 70,81 dan rata-rata hasil post-test adalah 89,84. Hal ini menunjukkan peningkatan skor rata-rata sebesar 26,87%, yang menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan dengan menggunakan aplikasi Duolingo efektif dalam meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris siswa. Nilai p-value yang jauh di bawah ambang batas konvensional 0,05 memberikan bukti kuat terhadap hipotesis nol (H0), yang berarti hipotesis alternatif (Ha) diterima dan hipotesis nol (H0) ditolak. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa pengajaran kosakata dengan menggunakan aplikasi Duolingo terbukti efektif dalam meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata Bahasa Inggris siswa kelas tujuh di SMPN 1 Tarakan.

One of the essential elements in learning English is vocabulary development. Without a sufficient vocabulary, language proficiency is hindered, and effective communication becomes impossible. Therefore, engaging teaching media, such as Duolingo, is needed. This study aims to determine the significant impact of using the Duolingo smartphone application on the vocabulary mastery of seventh-grade students, specifically focusing on verbs and nouns. The research method employed was pre-experimental. The population of this study consists of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 7 Tarakan, with a sample size of 32 students from class VII-4. The research instrument used was a written test in the form of a pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed using a t-test, and processed with the help of SPSS version 22.0. The results of the data analysis showed that the average pre-test score was 49.84, while the average post-test score was 78.75. The t-test results yielded a value of 0.000, less than 0.05, indicating that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, and the null hypothesis (HO) is rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that teaching vocabulary using Duolingo is proven to be effective in improving the vocabulary mastery of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 7 Tarakan.

Learning English involves skill-based learning that requires various approaches and techniques. Education today is significantly influenced by technological advancements, where in technology server as solution to address challenges in English language learning. Alongside the advancements in English language learning tools, Duolingo complements modern language learning through mobile phones. This research aimed to explore the use of the Duolingo application in enhancing vocabulary among seventh-grade student at SMP Negeri 5 Tarakan. This study employs an experimental method with a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design. The research sample consists of 30 students selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument used was a vocabulary test to assess student’s initial and post-treatment abilities. Based on data analysis, an improvement in student’s score between the pre-test and post-test was observed. From the findings, it can be concluded that using Duolingo can enhance vocabulary mastery among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 5 Tarakan. This research is expected to inform teachers and students about conducting intensive language learning practices form using the Duolingo application.

Abstrak: Bahasa Indonesia Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat implementasi aplikasi Duolingo dalam pengembangan kosakata Bahasa inggris pada siswa kelas delapan di SMPN 5 Tarakan. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain deskriptif kualitatif dengan jumlah partisipan sebanyak 32 siswa. Data yang di hasil dalam penelitian ini adalah dokumen, observasi, dan wanwancara. Data kemudian di analisis secara kualitatif dengan analisis tematik untuk dapat menjawab pertanyaan penelitian. Hasil penelitian menujuk kan bahwa penggunaan aplikasi Duolingo membantu siswa dalam mempelajari kosakata Bahasa inggris. Menurut siswa aplikasi ini sangat positif memberikan manfaat sebagai media pembelajaran dan siswa bisa menggunakan aplikasi ini untuk belajar secara mandiri kapanpun dan dimanapun. Thirty-two students participated in this qualitative descriptive study. This study collected documents, observations, and interviews. Subsequently, the data underwent a qualitative thematic analysis in order to address the study questions. The findings of the study demonstrated that students could enrich their vocabulary in English through the Duolingo application. The students' feedback explained that this application served as an excellent learning tool that allowed them to study on their own at any time and place. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a significant difference in English vocabulary among class VIII students at MTs DDI Tarakan who use Duolingo apps. This study used a quantitative method using pre-test and post-test experimental designs. The subjects in this study were eighth-grade students. The sampling technique utilized was purposive sampling, which involved sampling the entire population, hence the sample size was 17 students Data collection included vocabulary pre- and post-tests, as well as interviews. The results indicated that the hypothesis was accepted. The sample t-test showed a significant (2-tailed) result of 0.000 0.05. If the two-tailed significance level is less than 0.05. Based on pre-and post-test data, the researchers discovered a substantial relationship between Duolingo use and students' English vocabulary. Students' vocabulary improves significantly after using Duolingo Apps. Students enjoyed the learning process and improved their vocabulary understanding and retention, indicating Duolingo's effectiveness for English vocabulary among MTS DDI Tarakan grade VIII students.
