This study aimed to find out the strategies used by teachers in teaching English vocabulary in Merdeka Curriculum at seventh grade students of SMPN 5 Tarakan. The method used in this study was a descriptive qualitative method. The setting of this research was SMPN 5 Tarakan. The subject of this study was an English teacher who teaches seventh grade. Data were collected through observation and interviews. Based on the data analysis, the researcher found several strategies in teaching English vocabulary, namely using Pictures, Games, Dictionaries and Inquiry Based Learning. Based on the results of observations and interviews, showed that teachers used different strategies when teaching English in the classroom. The conclusion of this study revealed that there were several English vocabulary teaching strategies that are very useful for teachers when teaching, because by these strategies the teachers can know the limitations and characteristics of students. In addition, it is also recommended that English teachers must be more creative, develop and vary their strategies in teaching English vocabulary.

PERMASALAHAN-PERMASALAHAN DALAM KELAS EFL SELAMA PANDEMI COVID-19 DI SMP NEGERI 9 TARAKAN ABSTRAK Situasi pandemi Covid-19 telah mengubah sistem belajar mengajar dari tatap muka menjadi pembelajaran online. Hal ini menarik peneliti untuk mengkaji penelitian yang bertujuan menemukan (1) strategi guru yang digunakan dalam menyelenggarakan kelas online selama masa pandemi Covid-19 (2) permasalahan yang dijumpai oleh siswa dalam pembelajaran online. Metodologi penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Teknik pengumpulan data pada penelitian ini adalah observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas delapan SMP Negeri 9 Tarakan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) guru menggunakan strategi-strategi pengajaran seperti direct instruction teaching strategy, indirect instruction teaching strategy, interactive teaching strategy, experiential/empirical teaching strategy dan independent teaching strategy. Untuk memaksimalkan penggunan strategi-strategi tersebut, guru menekankan pada pendekatan interpersonal guna mengetahui lebih dalam terkait karakter dan kebutuhan siswa. (2) Adapun permasalahan yang dijumpai dalam pembelajran online yaitu permasalahan teknis seperti jaringan internet yang tidak stabil, kuota internet yang terbatas serta handphone yang tidak mendukung pembelajaran online, sedangkan permasalahan non-teknis yaitu sulit memhami materi secara mandiri dan kurangnya inisiatif dalam belajar. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian berikut, dapat dilihat bahwa sistem pembelajaran online tidak luput dari permasalahan-permasalahan atau hambatan-hambatan. Hal ini diatasi oleh guru dengan menggunakan strategi-strategi pengajaran online dan menekankan pada pendekatan interpersonal. THE PROBLEMS IN THE EFL CLASS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC AT SMP NEGERI 9 TARAKAN ABSTRACT The Covid-19 pandemic situation has changed the teaching and learning system from face-to-face to online learning. This attracts researchers to examine research that aims to find (1) teacher strategies used in conducting online classes during the Covid-19 pandemic (2) problems encountered by students in online learning. The research methodology used is a qualitative method with a case research approach. Data collection techniques in this research were observation, interviews, and documentation. The subjects of this research were eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 9 Tarakan. The results showed that (1) teachers used teaching strategies such as direct instruction teaching strategy, indirect instruction teaching strategy, interactive teaching strategy, experiential/empirical teaching strategy and independent teaching strategy. To maximize the use of these strategies, the teacher emphasizes the interpersonal approach to find out more about the character and needs of students. (2) The problems encountered in online learning are technical problems such as unstable internet network, limited internet quota and cellphones that do not support online learning, while non-technical problems are difficult to understand the material independently and lack of initiative in learning. Based on the results of the following research, it can be seen that the online learning system is not free from problems or obstacles. This is overcome by the teacher by using online teaching strategies and emphasizing the interpersonal approach.
