This research aimed to determine the reading comprehension problems experienced by students in the implementation of Merdeka Curriculum at SMPN 10 Tarakan and the causes of reading comprehension issues among seventh-grade students in class 7-1 at SMPN 10 Tarakan. The study employed a qualitative research with a descriptive qualitative model. This research was conducted at SMPN 10 Tarakan. The subjects of this study were 31 students from class 7-1, and one of English teacher who teaches in class 7-1 at SMPN 10 Tarakan. This research used observation sheets and interview guides to collect data. The researcher conducted classroom observation three times. And then the researcher interviewed six selected students and one English teacher. The data obtained were analyzed using the Miles & Hubberman theory. The research results indicated that students at SMPN 10 Tarakan faced difficulties in reading comprehension, including difficulties in understanding word meanings, comprehending long texts, identifying the main ideas of texts, understanding vocabulary and drawing conclusions. Furthermore, this research showed that the causes of students’ reading comprehension problems in the implementation of Merdeka Curriculum at SMPN 10 Tarakan are the students’ own background knowledge, the teaching techniques used by the teachers, and the environmental factors surrounding the students.

ABSTRACT This English is one of the subjects that plays an important role for the students. English skills consist of listening, speaking, reading, and writing that must be mastered by the students. During Covid-19 pandemic, English learning was conducted through online learning. The purpose of th study was to determine the perceptions of eight grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Tarakan about online English learning. The researcher used a descripive qualitative method. The subject of the research was eight grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Tarakan. The instruments of the research used were quistionnaires and interview guide. Data were analyzed by using the theory of Miles and Huberman including data collection, data reduction, data display and conclusion: drawing/verifying. The result showed that students preferred offline learning or face-to-face learning than online learning, because when English learning was conducted through some applications, students found it difficult to understand the material presented.

The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of students, teachers, and parents toward online English learning class during the COVID-19 pandemic at SMA Negeri 3 Malinau Utara. This research used a qualitative descriptive method by using the total sampling technique. The researcher took 32 students, 32 parents, and 4 English teachers as the samples in this study. The data were collected with questionnaires and interviews. The results of the questionnaire were presented in the form of percentages. Next, the researcher conducted an interview and wrote down the results of the observations. The results of this study showed that (1) Student perceptions from the questionnaire was 32.8% of students think that online English learning had no benefits, 34.4% of students think that online English learning had many drawbacks. Then 42.1% of students did not accept English language learners to be done online, and 34.3% of all students chose traditional English learning rather than online learning. (2) The teacher perceptions from the questionnaire showed that 42.85% of teachers did not feel the advantages of teaching English as significantly online, 25% of teachers felt that teaching English skills in online was not effective. Then 31.81% of teachers perceive that teaching English online has many shortcomings. (3) Parents' perceptions from the questionnaire displayed that 56.06% of parents disagreed with online English learning. The Parents agreed that English learning was done offline or face-to-face and 43.93% of parents thought that their child did not follow and enjoy English online learning well.

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan hasil persepsi siswa tentang pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris melalui Google Classroom untuk mengetahui sejauh mana pendapat siswa selama pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dilakukan menggunakan aplikasi pembelajaran. Desain dari penelitian ini adalah metode campuran dimana peneliti menggabungkan antara data kualitatif dengan data kuantitiatif untuk memperoleh data. Peneliti menggunakan penyajian secara deskriptif untuk menyampaikan hasil penelitian. Dalam teknik pengumpulan data, peneliti menggunakan instrument kuisioner dan lembar wawancara. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah kelas VIII-A SMP Negeri 5 Tarakan yang terdiri dari 33 siswa diambil melalui Purposive Sampling. Berdasarkan hasil angket kuisioner siswa menunjukan bahwa 1) sebanyak 51,5% siswa memilih pembelajaran dilangsungkan secara tatap muka, 2) sebanyak 60,6% siswa merasa nyaman ketika pembelajaran bahasa inggris dilangsungkan melalui google classroom, 3) sebanyak 57,6% siswa membutuhkan sumber belajar lain selain buku, 4) sebanyak 72,7% siswa merasa kesulitan memahami materi pembelajaran jika disampaikan melalui google classroom, 5) sebanyak 54,5% siswa selalu bertanya kepada guru ketika mereka tidak dapat mengucapkan bahasa inggris dengan benar dan 6) sebanyak 60,6% siswa merasa pembelajaran melalui google classroom memiliki pengaruh baik terhadap nilai pembelajaran. Berdasarkan aspek tersebut, dapat dilihat faktor persepsi yang paling mempengaruhi pembelajaran siswa ialah kesulitan siswa karena faktor kebutuhan. The purpose of this study was to describe the results of student perceptions of English learning through Google Classroom and the extent of student opinions in using learning applications. The design of this study were a mixed method where the researcher combined qualitative data and quantitative data to obtained the data. The researcher used descriptive presentation to convey the results. In data collection technique, the researcher used a questionnaire and an interview sheet as the instrument. The subject of this research were the students at class VIII-A of SMP Negeri 5 Tarakan which consists of 33 students and it was taken through purposive sampling. Based on the results of questionnaire, it showed that 1) there was 51.5% of students choose face-to-face learning, 2) 60.6% of students feel comfortable when learning English is carried out through Google Classroom, 3) there was 57.6% of students need other learning resources besides books, 4) 72.7% of students find difficulty to understand learning material if it is delivered thorugh Google Classroom, 5) 54.5% of students always ask the teacher when they cannot pronounce English correclty, and 6) 60.6% of students feel that learning through Google Classroom has a good influence on the value of learning. Based on these aspects, it can be concluded that the perception factor which most influences the student learning was students difficulties due to need factor.
