The Aimed of this research was to determine whether the use of picture series media has an effect to improve the writing result of eight grade students at SMPN 4 Tarakan. the population of this research where eight grade students of SMPN 4 Tarakan in the academic year 2021/2022. the number of samples in this study were 31 students of class VIII-6. this research used a pre-experimental design one group pretest and posttest design with purposive sampling technique. the results showed that there was a difference between the pretest and posttest. this is proven by the result of the average score of students. the mean score of the students on the pretest was 59.38 and the result on the posttest was 73.51. it can be seen that there is a significant increase in the average score of students in the posttest which is higher than the pretest. therefore, the result of the paired t-test show that the t-test of 7.573 was higher than the t-table of 2.042. based on the result of the test the researcher concluded that the use of picture series proved to be effective in improving the eight graders students learning outcomes in writing narrative text at SMPN 4 Tarakan.

ABSTRACT Yemima Kristiani. 2020. The Effectiveness of Using Picture Series to Improve Students’ Speaking Achievement in Narrative Text for XI Grade Jasa Boga 2 at SMK Negeri 1 Tarakan. (Advisor by Romlah Ulfaika, M. Pd). The aim of this research was to find the significant effect of Picture Series to improve students’ speaking achievement in xi grade of SMK Negeri 1 Tarakan. This research was pre-experiment. In this research, the researcher tried to find out the differences before and after being taught using Picture Series. The sample of this research was students in 11 Jasa Boga 2 class which consisted of 27 students at SMK Negeri 1 Tarakan in academic years of 2019/2020. The instrument was picture series that included pretest and posttest. Besides that, the researcher used descriptive analysis, hypothesis testing, and paired samples test for analyzed the statistically. The research result showed that there was different mean score between pretest and posttest. It was proven by the result of the students’ mean score. They were 59.00 in pretest and 75.92 in the posttest. It means that the improvement of the students’ mean score was 16.92. It can be seen that the improvement of students’ mean score in the posttest was higher than pretest and it indicated that there was significant difference from students’ speaking score between pretest and posttest. The result of paired sample test showed that t-test computation was 13.157 higher than t-table (2.056). So, 13.157 > 2.056 it means Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. As the conclusion, picture series were effective to improve students’ speaking achievement eleventh grade of SMK Negeri 1 Tarakan by using picture series. Vocabulary is a crucial thing to learn in language learning. This research objective was to find out whether there was any significant difference in students vocabulary achievement before and after using picture series at seventh grade SMPN 11 Tarakan. This research was an experimental research and used pre experimental one group pretest-posttest design. The population in this research was all of the seventh grade students at SMPN 11 Tarakan. The number of the sample in this research was 32 students. The sample was chosen by using purposive sampling technique. Class for treatment was VII-1. It consisted of 32 students. In analyzing the data the researcher was use paired sample t-test in SPSS 22.0. The research result showed that there was different mean score between pretest and posttest. It was proven by the result of the students’ mean score from pretest was 59.47 and 76.41 in the posttest. It means that the improvement of the students’ mean was 16.93. It showed that the improvement of the students mean score in the posttest was higher than pretest. The result of paired sample (2 tailed) 0.000 is lower than 0.05, it means that the picture series can give any contribution to the students’ vocabulary achievement. It can be concluded that using picture series is effective in teaching vocabulary.
