Abstrak

Slang is a variation of language commonly used in informal communication and frequently encountered in film dialogue. This research aimed to analyze the types of slang, both denotative and connotative meanings, used in the "Imaginary Friends (IF)" movie. This researcher employed a descriptive qualitative approach using content analysis as the research method. The theory proposed by Allan and Burridge (2006) was applied to classify the types of slang. The results showed that there were 27 slang expressions in the movie. The most dominant types of slang were flippant type with 10 expressions, fresh and creative type with 9 expressions, followed by clipping type with 4 expressions and imitative type with 4 expressions, meanwhile expressions of acronym were not found. Based on a semantic analysis, 19 expressions had connotative meanings and 8 expressions had denotative meanings. The connotative meanings consisted of 14 negative connotations and 5 positive connotations, meanwhile the denotative meanings consisted of 4 positive denotations and 4 negative denotations. These findings indicated that slang in the "Imaginary Friends" movie was used more to convey implicit meanings, emotions, and attitudes than literal meanings, thereby enhancing character expression and the context of the conversation. The finding of this study was expected to contribute to sociolinguistic and semantic research, and serve as a reference for students, educators, and future researchers in understanding and analyzing the use of slang in audiovisual media, particularly films.
