CODE SWITCHING USED IN SPEAKING CLASS OF ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STUDENTS IN UNIVERSITAS BORNEO TARAKAN
The aims of this study is to find out the types, functions, and reasons of code switching used by students in English education department in Speaking for Informal Interaction class. This study used qualitative descriptive research method. This descriptive research was conducted at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Borneo Tarakan with the sample of second semester students. Sample determination is based on purposive sampling techniques. The data collection techniques used observation sheets, interviews, and video recordings. The data analysis used step suggested by Miles and Huberman in Creswell’s book. The result of this study showed that there are two types of code switching used by English students in second semester, namely: intra-sentential code switching with 9 data and tag switching with 10 data acquisition. The result also showed that there were three functions of using code switching in classroom, namely: repetition, interjection and message qualification. The result of this study also showed the reasons why students used code switching in speaking classes. The reason of the students used code switching is repetition carried out to clarify the meaning and purpose conveyed. In addition, the lack of vocabulary in English make students also used code switching.
