STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION TOWARDS ENGLISH AS MEDIUM INSTRUCTION IN EFL CLASS AT SEVENTH GRADE OF SMPIT ULUL ALBAB TARAKAN
This study aims to describe students’ perception towards English as Medium Instruction (EMI) used by English teachers in teaching English in Junior High School at SMPIT Ulul Albab Tarakan. The research method was qualitative method. This research was conducted in class VII Ad-Dhuha, VII Al Buruj, VII Al-Qamar, and VII As-Sajdah. To collect data, researcher used a questionnaire with purposive sampling technique. The questions were designed to measure students’ attitudes towards English, students’ understanding of English, students’ perception of their English, and students’ prception of the language used by their English teacher in class. The study result showed that most students agreed that EMI was predominantly applied by English teachers in teaching English subjects. By applying EMI in the classroom improves students’ English proficiency with appropriate English standards, motivates students to learn English, increase self-confidence, helps them to understand English textbooks or articles, and helps them to understand international cultures.
