Abstrak
The objective of this study was to describe the types of technique used by teacher in teaching English vocabulary and to describe the process of teaching and learning English carried out by the English teacher of seventh grade of SMP Negeri 11 Tarakan. This study used descriptive qualitative. English teacher of seventh grade was taken as the research subject. The researcher collected documention such as syllabus and lesson plans, as well observations in class with teacher. The results of this study indicated that the teaching technique used by the teacher in teaching English vocabulary is to repetition drill and guessing game techniques. It was evidenced by the result of observations made by the tesearcher showing the results of saturated data in three meetings. The learning process was quite conducive, student pay attention to the teacher’s explanation and did the tasks given by teacher. Although some students were not active so students feel bored. However, students still submmited the assignment given. Observations obtained by researcher from teacher include that when students feel bored in learning the teacher provided games related to the lesson so that students remain active and do not get bored easily,besides that, students are proficient in speaking the teacher guided in a simple and motivating way so that students dare to speak.
