Abstrak
ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to find out the level of motivation in learning English and to find out the correlation between students’ extrinsic motivation and students’ intrinsic motivation in learning English. The study was conducted at SMAK Don Bosco Tarakan. The sample of this study was 55 students of eleventh grades. This study uses descriptive quantitative analysis and the technique sampling used in this study was purposive sampling. Furthermore, the technique used in collecting data is questionnaires. The questionnaire consists of 40 questions in which question 1-15 are questions for extrinsic motivation and question 16-40 are questions for intrinsic motivation. The result of this study shows that the total mean score of extrinsic motivation was 2.42 and the total of mean score of intrinsic motivation was 2.63 However, the overall mean motivation was considered a medium level of motivation. Meanwhile, the result of correlation of this study indicates there is no significant correlation based on the Pearson product moment, the correlation coefficient or the rtest which was 0,213 was lower than rtable which was 0.266, Therefore, there was sufficient evidence to suggest that the Ho was accepted and Ha was rejected. On the other words there is no tendency that the students who motivated from extrinsic motivation in learning English will have a high motivation of intrinsic motivation in learning English.
