It used a pre-experimental design. The research population was 192 students. Using a purposive sampling technique, the 7 D class which consisted of 32 students were taken as the sample. A writing test was as the research instrument. Data analyzed are data from pretest and posttest. Data taken from the pretest and posttest writing scores were analyzed descriptively and inferentially using the SPSS 24.0. The results of this study indicated that there were 16.62 points of difference in the average writing score between the pretest (56.88) and the posttest (73.50). The results of paired sample t-test showed that the calculated t value was 12,357 and the critical t value was 2,040. As the calculated t value was greater that the critical t value (12,357 > 2,040), the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. The results of this analysis proved that the use of PWIM was effective in increasing achievement of writing descriptive text for the seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 6 Tarakan.
