Abstrak
abstract.This study sought to answer two questions related to learning strategies used by seventh grade students of SMP N 8 Tarakan first, what was the percentage of learning strategies used by the students in learning English? Second, what was the most dominant learning strategy used by the students in learning English. This research used a quantitative descriptive method. The researcher described the learning strategies used by the seventh grade students. The population of this study was 215 students and the researcher took 5% (141 students) of the total population as the samples. In addition, a Microsoft Excel 2010 was used to analyze the data to find out the percentage of learning strategies. The instruments used in this study were a closed questionnaire and structured interview. The results showed that the strategy most frequently used by the seventh grade students of SMP N 8 Tarakan was metacognitive strategy (65%) and the least used was compensation strategy (43%).
